In my opinion, changing drop at heel is of little consequence. Drop at face is the big thing.

if it's right at the heel, I would as suggested shave the comb. I have done it to 3 SxS's. There has to be enoguh wood there though, you want it to look right when finished.

I don't see where anyone said what manufacturer's gun the OP is buying. Maybe that would help.

Shave it down. If the stock is 14” Lop and your face is at the mid point at best a 1/4” bend will be a 1/2” bend at the heel. The further you move away from the stationary end the greater the effect will be. If your face hits at 4”, more likely the case, then the change at the heel will be greater. Having the comb lowered is so easy and just refinish the stock afterwards. But before I did anything I would shoot the gun for point of impact. It might be just about what you want already. I watch the pitch when buying a new gun. Some shooters have strange ideals about pitch. Gun fit is everything, not just comb height.

The comb would not look right if shaved. It would look abnormal. I’m not in a position to buy it just to see if I could shoot it proficiently. Additionally, it doesn’t have the level of engraving I’m looking for in this purchase. I try to improve quality with every new buy.

Ok, so it was not nice enough for you and did not fit you. So what is the problem? Just trying to see what options for the next time?

Informational. But there was still a chance depending on responses. Now it’s ruled out. I have so much for a budget. Might go a couple of 1000 more for right gun. This could very well be last gun for while

If the drop is right at face it really doesn't matter what it measures at the heel, IMO. The measurement at face is what determines where the eye is in relation to the axis of the bore, and that is what's most important, not where the butt contacts your shoulder pocket (within reason).

The higher the drop at face (comb) the higher the POI will be......... period.

Stan,
I disagree with your comments about DAH not mattering. It depends upon the type of shooting you do. I see a ton of British guns with 2" or less at heel, fine for shooting incomers from a peg but terrible to mount in the field on flushing birds.

You are spot on about drop at face and POI though.

This is an interesting discussion. I have noticed that many English guns listed for sale have pretty straight combs. I agree with the "drop at face is the most important " comment, but I'm wondering how two guns with the same 1 1/2" drop at the comb, but one with 2 1/2" and the other with 2 1/8" drop at heel would impact for the same shooter?
