Does anyone recommend or know of someone who can recut checkering? I’m especially interested in someone in the northern Illinois or southern Wisconsin areas. I hate shipping gun things and would rather deliver them myself. Thanks in advance.

I don't know anyone. But you have a great idea to drive whenever you can. As I posted on here, I drove about 1400 miles (twice) round trip to have my Model 21 engraved by Pauline Muerelle last year. Once to drop it off and the second trip to pick it up. It did cost me about $400 in toll road fees to drive back and forth through Pennsylvania twice. But I did get to see Connecticut. And the Winchester plant in New Haven. It was a great trip and beautiful country up there. So good luck and have fun.

I'll second the idea of driving to deliver and pickup the gun if that's feasible. I did that when I had Bill Schwartz in Georgia repair an Alexander Henry single shot for me. He did great work at a super reasonable price. Well worth 8 hours in total in a car to get to talk and see his shop and discuss the work when it was complete.
Regarding recutting checkering, may I ask what the plan is to refinish the checkered area to blend it with the original finish? This seems to be skipped too often and leaves the recut area looking too new in comparison to the rest of the stock.
(Edit - I have and will continue to ship guns for service. I've received two guns over the years that arrived broken. Both were long-barreled rifles and both broke through the wrist. You can package to prevent this but you can't always count on others doing the same. Although you should expect a gunsmith or auction house specializing in firearms to do a great job on this. At the end of the day, have firearms insurance that covers your property while in transit. These policies are cheap compared to the cost of insuring individual shipments with the carriers, or worse, having a broken gun with no recourse.)

I don't know what the big deal is about shipping a buttstock and a forend to a checkerer. There is absolutely no reason to ship the entire gun, and anyone who can load and shoot a shotgun can learn to remove the wood from the gun and properly pack it for shipping. I have often shipped gun wood from Georgia to Montana for checkering, or re-checkering, with never a hitch. Shipping shotgun wood isn't rocket science.
May God bless America and those who defend her.

I’m not sure about any of these as far as whether they are currently taking on new work or not, but I would recommend contacting Doug Mann (Kanakee), Dave Norin (Antioch), Toby Leads (Fond du Lac), Mark Beasland (Medford). They are all ACGG members so their contact info should be on the acgg.org website.

This is your Brain---I don't know what the big deal is about shipping a buttstock and a forend to a checkerer. And This is your Brain on Drugs---I don't know anyone. Jimmy is not exaggerating about paying $400.00 in Toll Road fees alone, for two round trips across Pennsylvania. Actually, it is now $118.80 each way. So two round trips across the state in a car is now $475.20. The Pennsylvania Turnpike System has the highest Toll Road fees in the world... and those ridiculous fees will have annual scheduled increases until 2051. Yet another consequence of Democrats in power. I live in Pa., and refuse to use them anymore. There are too many other roads. The really insane part is paying that exorbitant toll fee once, and then returning on the same toll road. Making yet another round trip and paying those same tolls again is just off-the-charts crazy... especially when Interstate 80 traverses the entire state without tolls, and actually would have taken Jimmy closer to his Connecticut destination on a better, more modern, and more scenic highway. But a gun owner who rabidly supports an anti-gunner like Joe Biden clearly isn't thinking rationally. I won't even comment on the sanity or the carbon footprint of someone who cries about CO2 and Global Warming making two 1400 mile round trips from Indiana to Connecticut to carry a few pounds of gun metal. The number of complete guns that are lost or damaged during shipping is a tiny percentage, and most of the damage risk could be avoided by just careful and secure packaging. A sturdy package containing stock wood alone would be an even lower risk to ship. Stan is 100% right. Ship it USPS Registered and Insured with instructions to return ship the same way, and relax while saving time and money. Oh, and applying stain/finish to the recut checkering to match the existing finish is easily done too.

Before getting it recut, take some time and a soft toothbrush to clean out the checkering. It may be the accumulation of old wax, sweat, crud, etc. has made the checkering look like it's in need of recutting. I've seen that with a couple guns I've bought, where a good cleaning saved a lot of work.

![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/4TuKp6F.jpg) By the way, I do apologize. I forgot to mention, when I drove up to Connecticut to have my gun engraved, I didn't want to drive one of my Corvettes through places like New York. So, on both trips I leased a car. And it sure was fun screamin' through states like Pennsylvania in this brand spankin' new Dodge Charger I leased on one of the trips. So, there's another $400 I spent on both trips. It just goes to show you, thanks to Joe Biden and the democrats, I keep getting these huge cost of living raises all the time, which is more than I need and it gives an average guy like me a chance to live a rather lavish lifestyle. So, I don't worry about minute little things like inflation, the cost of groceries, gasoline, or the cost of vacations, etc.. They send me this big check every month and by the time I blow that one, here comes another one!! It makes traveling around the country so enjoyable. Signed.......Jimmy The Jetsetter. 😄

Signed.......Jimmy The Jetsetter. 😄 I am thrilled to see Jimmy continuing to IGNORE my posts by responding to them, as he obviously did again here! It's one thing to say Liberalism is a Mental Disorder. It's much better when Liberal Democrats like Jimmy go out of their way to prove it to us! I can also recall feeling bad for Jimmy last year when he told us that he is in his mid-late 70's and not able to hunt anymore due to his unsteady legs. It is always sad to see someone age out of hunting due to poor health, and to know it could happen to any of us, unless we drop over dead before suffering declining health. But that also tells me this big monthly check that Jimmy is getting, which includes "huge cost of living raises all the time" "thanks to Joe Biden and the Democrats", is actually a Social Security check. And we all should be smart enough to know that the Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment did not keep pace with the Inflation caused by Joe Biden's reckless and poor handling of the economy. You would have to be a special kind of stupid to be thrilled with more money... that actually buys you less. I never understood not owning at least one dependable vehicle that you can actually use and drive anywhere. So I am certainly not impressed with the foolishness of having to rent or lease a vehicle for a couple trips to Connecticut that were unnecessary, except for paranoia about shipping gun parts. Personally, if I had to live retirement check to retirement check, I'd be more paranoid about being one check away from bankruptcy. I also think it is kind of pathetic to post a bragging picture of a car you don't own, and especially one with a big dent over the rear wheel well. I wonder if Jimmy rented it with that damage, or if he dented it, and had to pay extra for that too? People with functioning brains, and retirement savings accounts, and other investments know that they have lost a great deal under the rule of Biden and the anti-gun Democrats. Stock Market gains are not gains at all, when it is all eaten up by inflation. People who live paycheck to paycheck, or blow their Social Security check just before the next one arrives understandably may be foolish enough to think that is doing well, and constitutes a "lavish" and "Jetsetter" lifestyle. But that apparent mental defect helps to explain why so many Liberal Democrats remain solidly behind Joe Biden... even after showing his severe cognitive decline in the Debate... even after he has dramatically increased the cost of food, gasoline, energy, and everything else... has taxpayers spending Hundreds of Billions of dollars supporting wars that happened due to Biden Foreign Policy blunders and weakness... has us closer to nuclear war... has taxpayers paying for housing, healthcare, and education of illegal immigrants... supporting perverted transgender indoctrination of our children... supporting taxpayer funded forgiveness of student loans... and supporting the erosion of Constitutional Rights like the 1st and 2nd Amendments. Ignorance may be bliss, but it is still ignorance. It would be tempting to actually IGNORE people like this, but they represent a real danger to our Constitutional Republic. And for us to IGNORE or otherwise accept a Gun Owner who votes for anti-gunners like Joe Biden is about as dumb as thinking a cancerous tumor is harmless, and will just go away.
