Hi,

I know just enough about drillings to be dangerous. I am posting pictures to try and do as much identification as possible. It appears to be as made with the exception of the rear swivel. I know it is 16 gauge with 2 inch chambers. The rifle is 7mm of some sort. I cannot ID a maker so I am assuming it is a guild gun. Although not pictured the bores are excellent. I am helping a friend Identify this gun for the widow of his brother. All information and any ball park values will also be appreciated

Tom..

From Post 1912 & made in Suhl with Sauer & Sohn tubes in 8X58 1/2 Sauer. Not sure just how much Sauer contributed by the L are more than likely for Langenhan/Gebrüder Langguth/Luck mechanic and I am pretty sure the Eagle with the L on the left side of the lug is that of Luck. Luck & Sauer were very chumy @ one point. Right side scope mounts too.....

The scattergun tubes would be 65mm chambers.

Most interesting how low the preliminary proof and Sauer & Sohn stamp are on the tube. Like they were using any & all stock during WWI. It will date to the WWI period.

A whole slew of similar hammer drillings just passed under the hammer & I saw prices like $450, but on the Open Road they should fetch twice that.

Gebrüder Luck hung out their gunmaking shingle in 1879 and in addition to guns, they made Bicycles to meet the Bicycle Craze of the late 1800s. The frame and spark arrestors, whatever, near the strikers date to a much older period that WWI. I would say they were burning thru inventory during WWI trying just to meet orders.

Too, Simson & Luck were most chummy. Karl Luck was a sidekick to Löb Simson & Moses Simson, who collectively hung out their gunmaking shingle in either 1850/1856. Simson had a hammer forge and I am not sure how technician Karl Luck was tied to Gebrüder Luck, but Gebrüder Luck was know for gun parts as well as something to do w/ Electrical Power facility? Anyway, I do not see Karl Luck as a Büchsenmacher, but he still could have been. Karl Luck along with Löb Simson & Moses Simson joined forces in 1862, the same year Löb expired. Then 7 years later in 1869 Moses expired. Karl Luck hung on till 1884 and left. So I am sure there wa a lot of cross-sourcing between Luck & Simson. Both went on to make weapons & bicycles and Simson dabbled in cars & Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers.

Back to Luck, the made what was referred to as a >>5-Pfunds-Drilling<<. It is entirely possible that someone sourced components from Sauer & Luck and made this drilling during WWI or that Luck made it?

Raimey,
As I understand this gun was made around 1912-14. It could have been made by Sauer & Shon with some involvement of Luck. It also could be a guild gun with parts sourced from Sauer and Luck.
Thanks for all the information. I've read a lot of the history you mentioned. Your info sent me down several rabbit holes.

Indeed, Rabbit holes are my business and you are not going to find a Rabbit if you don't look in a Rabbit Hole.

But yes, I think some Suhl mechanic sourced tubes from Sauer and components, and possibly some effort, from Luck and cobbled it all together. Although the serial number is relatively high and I haven't seen the buttplate, I can't say that Luck fully constructed it.

I would date it between 1912 & say 1919. If the Luck trademark is on the buttplate, Luck did indeed make it. And Gebrüder Luck could have made it for another retailer.

But it looks to have nice wood, sideclips(Purdey Wings), menacing muzzle and top tang selector, Kugel to Schrot.
