Ted, there is a slight difference between the Cape Buff and a Water Buff.
I suspect some if not most of the reputation of the Cape Buff, for asorbing bullets like flies is an myth, but I also doubt that they are easy to stop at close range, in a charge. They do take a lot of bullet to put them down and 12 bore slugs are not my idea of a good choice, just the only one at hand.
In a charge situation, if you get a shot, it must be an near instantious killing shot. Not much good to have the Buff expire 30 seconds after he gets to you. So you need a central nervous system direct hit, brain or spinal cord. Heart or lung shot might just take longer to kill him than you have before you are in a real fix. Fractured leg might not be enough and a raking shot from mouth to anus will take too long to kill him.
I do not like the odds of getting a slug to reach the brain from the frontal area. Not that big of a target and if you hit high you do not stand any chance of penetration. Might stand a better chance of a shot at the base of the neck to try to reach the spinal cord. Low hit would take out major blood vessels, left or right might break the sholder if the slug holds togeather long enough. It would be worth shooting two into a dead Buff to check for penetration. Nice to see if the slug can reach where you want it to go.
When you get right down to it this is just a situation where you throw out the book. Shoot 3" shells in a 2 3/4" gun because that is your only real choice. If it works, most likely your Briely thin walls will blow out the end of the gun. I doubt the gun will blow up on the first two shots. About like a proof load for your gun and it should stand up to that load one or two times in each barrel. I pray that you never get to test what happens but if you do what happens to your gun becomes unimportant.

There is a whole lot of hide, bone, and tendon in the way of a clean hit to just about all the vitals of a 'buff (water or cape won't make a damn bit of difference in this scenario) and an animal PO'ed enough to charge may be able to kill you even if he is dead and doesn't know it yet. Read that again. How long does it take for blood pressure in an adrenaline fueled charge by a 'buff to reach zero?
I bet it just might be long enough for you to die.
I guess after looking at the entire picture, as laid out by our hero, I will say, quietly, "I have my doubts" and leave it at that. Best, Ted

"LGFSo here is the question: what is likely to happen if I fire a hard slug, in a chamber too short for the cartridge, through a tight choke? I am not too concerned with accuracy, as this would happen at close range."
I'd have to call you either brave or nuts! Are you still alive??? I'd be very concerned vwith accuracy in a close charge, n I wouldn/t want to have to reload n stuff in two slugs when I see the long grass parting Get a Gun bearer & a bigger Gun for christsakes!!! franc

A buf is not a griz, but what shipmates stationed in alaska carried when fishing were either a 300win or 12ga. In alaska they say you can recognize the tourist - they're wearing a hand gun......
If a double - one tube had #4 buck to fire at the face and blind it - then save the slug for when they could stick the bbl in it's mouth. Some carried a pump/short bbl and loaded buck/slug/buck/slug....
My concern shooting a HARD slug out of a really tight choke would be ripping the end off the bbl. but as long as i hit the buf - who would care.... as you have tubes, put a cyl tube in the bbl you load the slug in.
I have shot a black ba'ar - not a buf - but heavy bone mass with a 3" brennke (recoil is like a 4570 with a heavy load & 500gr slug), it smashed the shoulders and left an exit would you could put your fist in. If you can get them, the BRI sabot would be the shizzle - they were disigned for shooting thru barackades to get gunmen shooting at cops....
Another thing they do in AK, and I think may work well for you, is carry their backup shotgun in a back scabord (like an arrow shoulder quiver) - you could carry a short bbl bakail 45/70 SxS loaded with solids - ubber penitration and no worries of breaking the law.
Sorry for the rambling, still working of first cup of joe...

There is no gun in the world that will guarantee stopping a charging animal that is that big. And youre not trying to kill the buffalo, correct? Just stop him from stomping you to death. Well, if a shotgun slug or two at close range wont stop him then nothing is going to stop him.

I think Treb's got it. Big slugs+close range=big holes. RE: Handguns, on one of my trips to Alaska, I was Dude packing a S&W 45 long colt, My bear gun . My guide said "Lets try something, jump up and down while wearing your hip boots 50 times. Then I'll throw a tennis ball (Bears brain size) at you in a gravel parking lot so it bounces a lot. See how many times you hit it. Best stick that handgun in your mouth and go easy" Good analogy

Jump up and down 50 times wearing hip boots!!!
Jeepers, I'd have a tough time just holding onto a revolver after that, let alone trying to aim it!!

I'll take this "last ditch" weapon with me to AK or AA (not 82nd Airborne- Africa) and stake my life on it- Ten gauge sideby double hammer gun- two triggers- No single trigger to Fubar, no safety to miss-slide forward, with first barrel hammer back and second one forward- no chance of a "double discharge", easy to grasp visible hammers- 25 inch barrels open bores full stock and forearm- No sling (to hang up in brush) and with 3 and 1/2 chambers- prefer brass cases against moisture- or modern plastic- No paper- OO buckshot both barrels- Uncle Mike's carry black fabric pouch for 5 extra rounds on off-mount side of buttstock, solid red recoil pad- no need for a front bead sight-
