I read it the same way. Not only is literacy an issue today, it appears to have been an issue then.

1868 - 1875 proof marks, but for some reason the gauge is not stamped. No reproof.

Took it out shooting today. It worked well. I had Steven Hughes measure the chokes and drop. Fooled me too. I could just read the bit starting with an 'E' and wondered 'Ejector'. I once had a Thomas Wild gun that had escaped the nominal bore mark. An oversight at the Proof House but it meant the gun was not actually 'in proof' as there was no way of determining whether or not it was. I had it re-proofed no problem. The Proof House did make mistakes but I doubt they would admit it. Still, they may test hundreds of guns a week. Lagopus.....
