Serialized Sauer tubeset from 1923 and passed thru Suhl Proof facility in 1924, even with the ledger #, Suhl used a ledger number for about 6 moths or sent their wares to the Zella - Mehlis Proof Facility during renovation, but I believe it was in 1921/1922? Repair in 1938 but I know not why Francotte whaled on it with his hammer unless the custodian wanted Francotte Chokes?

Those are barrel extension you note.

It probably has roots w/ the Brenneke Verschluß(Brenneke's Selbstpanner-Sicherheits-Drilling) and Bernhard Merkel as you note.

The gun was made in Germany for sale by Francotte. It was proofed in May 1924, under ledger number 235. Since there is a ledger number, it was likely proofed in Zella Mehlis and was therefore likely made there or near there. I do not believe it was made by Bernhardt Merkel because the Merkels operated in Suhl and would have used that proof house. The gun was rechambered to 12 ga 2 3/4" and re-proofed during June 1938. All the proof marks are German, but there is a mark on each barrel flat, that is not a proof mark. It is a circle with either RB or AB under a crown. This could be a maker's mark or a workman's touch mark, but I do not recognize it. Maybe Jani or Raimey will recognize it.

The letters >>AF<< surmounted by a Crown are those of Francotte but someone attempted to mask them.

No, this is an all Suhl gun because from late 1923 to early 1924 Suhl used a ledger number and you cannot use that ledger stamp to differentiate between the two during this period. Suhl may have been using the Z-M proof facility? The Sauer serialized tube plus the 1924 Block Nitro stamp all support this.

Thought was odd to have Francotte peddling a German piece. Looks like pigeon gun to me.

I too would say a Pichón Gun with the 75.5 cm tubes but the straight-hand stock & Purdey / Anson push-rod forend release points to a non-German end user.

I will search for those barrel extension scatterguns.....

II wonder if the 1st mechanic or the custodian took the gun to A. Francotte for chokes? I assume the last weapons handler masked the AF?? But it well could have been the 1st.

I have seen the initials >>F.A.<< and time and time again I have laid the blame @ the feet of Franz Adamy. But it appears that a Franz Amthor was an efficient tube mechanic during this period..... Franz Amthor of Suhl.
