Now is the time to remove choke tubes, clean threads, re-lube with your lubricant/grease/protectant of choice. Announcement stolen from another site. Gil

A "choke tube" is a device that is apparently hostile to shotgun "bores". wink With a tip of the hat to Ed Zern.

None of my guns have choke tubes, is that a problem?

I lied, none that I care about. I have been drinking...

I'm proud that my question brought on such pertinent comments about these "choke tube" thingies. I like Lloyd's comment the best.

I wouldn’t consider putting choke tubes in a double. My FAIR Rizzini Isides, 28 and 16 have them, but these are inexpensive doubles and seem to do fine with them. That’s how they are sold in the U.S. A. Any gun I have shoots better than I can shoot it. FAIR may custom make a gun without choke tubes, but then it’s a long wait. Other than single shot break action turkey guns shooting TSS, I have one pump with choke tubes and it came that way from Ithaca, an M37 28 ga. I don’t feel it is a handicap. Beretta's 686 series come with them. Over the past decade and a half, I have spent time and effort developing single shots in .410, 12 and 20 ga. with choke tubes for wild turkeys. The patterns are considerably better for my purposes with choke tubes shooting TSS than with the barrel as it was factory made. Being able to try out various constrictions and architectures, from gun to gun, can make a huge difference in desired pattern densities and evenness of spread for shot size chosen. If someone has choke tubes in a double, but wishes to make it a permanent fixed choke, just ignore the cleaning and oiling of the threads. After a few years of neglect, it will be permanently choked to your heart’s satisfaction. Gil

I have a drawer in my gunsmithing tool box that has a bunch of choke tubes in it. I don’t know for sure where most of them go.

Do they need to be oiled also?

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Ted
