How are you estimating 85%? Your goal should be to have the highest possible contact between the barrel breeches and the standing breech, while also having a high percentage of contact between the hook and hinge pin. In the real world 85% is good.

The only real way to determine this is to smoke it in with a kerosene lamp, a fat lighter'd pine splinter, or something else that makes a lot of smoke, safely. Smoke the barrel breech faces and the hook also to see if you're getting good contact in both places.

I've done this job before and failed to get the kind of results I wanted, so I know the pitfalls.

I Should clarify. The percentage is 85% of effort (really a guess based on past efforts) not 85% on face. I am only about 10% on face but I had a lot to do to get to the smoke in phase. The smoke-in phase is next, but I am going to see if I can acquire a forearm first If I can find one then great, otherwise I am using the one I have and move forward.

I have successfully fitted a few other barrel sets but not one with a cross bolt.

I am open to finders fee on a 310 forearm.

Many thanks.

You're a brave man Charlie Brown in undertaking this task. Kudos to you! While I enjoy working on guns I have learned from past mistakes to finally listen to the little voice in my head that says, "stop"! don't go any further rather than listen to the counter voice that says, " just a little more, you can do it, you can do it....Oh crap! I actually know my limitations now and I have never regretted since paying for quality work that I can't do myself. I hope you are able to power through it as you say and are happy with the end result. You are right, sometimes it is not a matter of money but a matter of pride and perseverance.

my fine motor skills have never been great, but, i was a good deal more inclined to attempt things at 40, than i am a few weeks from 75....

best regards,

tom
