Not a great picture but had to quarter, load and haul farther from the road and later in the day than I would have liked. Remarkably accurate Mulcaz 8x57JRS x 20 gauge w/Zeiss 3.5x10 x 50mm scope. 196 SB bullet vs. antelope/speed-goat: humanly devastating, although antelope are pretty small critters.

Was hoping to use the shotgun barrel on huns or sharpies but didn't see a single bird over several miles to tromping the prairies. Maybe next time.

Put one of the roasts and trim into a crock pot for a few hours and was, as always, delicious! IMHO antelope meat is the best of all wild game meat save maybe blue grouse!

Where was the hunt? Couldn't agree more about the meat. Around 35 years ago when my daughters were 6-10, they couldn't wait for me to get home and grill antelope tenderloin for them. They called it "soft beef" and it was their favorite meat. You have to take into account that we raised and direct sold Belted Galloway's at the time, which in my opinion were the best cattle meat available. I won several chili competitions over the years, and never once revealed that it was antelope meat. I let people assume it was roast meat from our cattle. People who would not eat wild game would wolf it down. I will say that I particularly liked the animals from around Rollins when I hunted there. With all the sagebrush, it had a natural flavor the was incredible. When I hunted there, I would buy 2 or 3 doe permits (which never seemed to sell enough to meet their quota for management) and ship the meat home. I kept the steaks and roasts and had the rest made into antelope sausage links before shipping.

Now I've made myself hungry.

Nice buck and gun!

Now the picture doesn't seem to show....I thought it was earlier. Will try to fix it.

Hunt was in Eastern Montana and glad you agree that antelope is great chow! I've never heard "soft beef" but that makes sense. Numbers are way down so I didn't opt for the doe tag this year, plus was way too far off the road for more than one.

I was listening to a Montana hunting podcast and a biologist said that the ultimate big game animal would be an antelope the size of an elk, which makes perfect sense to me: elk sized critter with delicious antelope tasting meat.

"Soft beef" is a 6 year old's term for fork tender grilled steak with no fat. It was a major request at our house for several years until they learned the word "tenderloin".

What is the device on the scope between the rings and what is the purpose?

It's a safety 'keeper' for the scope because it detaches with the slightest movement of the claw base. I've had other guns with claw mounts that required at least some effort to take the scope off and this one's almost like a set trigger.

The gun gets used a lot and I didn't want to worry about bumping the base on a branch or something and losing the scope and crazy expensive rings, so I sewed it up the 'keeper' mainly for peace of mind. I paid for rings once and never want to do that again, would cost more than I paid for the gun! Sewed it with 3/8" webbing with two 3/8" side release buckles.

Mt Al,
Your mounts look like modern replacements, if so, they are likely misfit. If the notch in the rear ring is wedge shaped (like a sideways "v"), that is the problem. It should be a "slot" instead. It can likely be properly refit by someone that knows what to do. I suggest New England Custom Guns. I am not connected with them in any way.

Mike, thanks and that confirms the suggestion that the gun was rebuilt in 1990. I'll look for a wedge vs. slot. In my much-less-experienced opinion the entire barrel, base, ring, sight, rib, forend wood, etc., look like more modern replacements. I'll take pics of the proof marks and post here soon. Thank you as always.

MtAl,
Proof marks would tell a lot.
