To if the original powder was R5, VV N140 has similar characteristics & I have had great success w/ N140 and use it across the board.

these case measurements are taken from a chamber cast and measuring fired-formed cases.

overall length = 2.350"
base diameter = 0.512"
shoulder diameter = 0.495"
rim diameter = 0.475"
rim thickness = 0.050"
neck length = 0.335"
neck diameter = 0.405"

Hello all,

As mentioned in a prior post, I made cartridges for my newly acquired rifle in 9.5 Peterlongo caliber by modifying 375 H&H brass. It took me 20 hours to make 25 pieces of brass. For those that may be interested, and those that may need to make custom cases, the following captioned pictures tells the process of how I made them.

I use IMR 4895 in place of R5 as Raimey does with VV N140. Out of habit, I reduce the load and work back up. Many of these old Metric cartridges were loaded with R5 and it is very handy to have a substitute. Now, if someone could find a substitute for 1912 and 1919 powder we would be in good shape. BTW, 2.350" does correspond to 60mm case length rather than the expected 71mm.

Apparently there are no known cartridge specimens to this caliber, also no ballistic data.
I am not aware of any German or Austrian cartridge company which at that time published loading data or ballistical data such as muzzle velocities

Obviously there have been cartridges available in 1912 for this rifle but I think is is quite moot to speculate what powder was used.
If those cartridges were produced by the Austrian company of G. Roth (quite possible) then probably some Austrian powder was used.

And when one is "hand-making" cartridges today then one is really out on one's own to establish appropriate and safe loads.
I call this "hand-making" because the process is far above the word "reloading".
Hats off to Buckstix! Great work and a wonderful rifle!

fuhrman,
Powder type and charge weight was often included in old catalogs' data, especially, but not only by DWM. This data is also often shown on the box, containing the cartridges, along with ballistic data. Instead of muzzle velocity/ energy it is often shown at 25 meters, which complicates comparison between foreign and American cartridges. I am given to understand that Austrian ammunition companies were required to use Austrian propellants, which didn't seem to be as efficient as German propellants in similar cartridges. This is the reason substitutes are so handy for handloaders, when carefully and thoughtfully applied.

Mike,
I have seen such loading data in RWS and DWM catalogs dating from around the 1930s but certainly not in older catalogs before WWI.
Maybe such information was given on cartridge boxes, but in the case we discuss here there are no known cartridges.
In an old book (by Friedrich von Gagern) have also read complaints about inferior Austrian powders.
Some years ago I inherited a modest collection of hunting cartridges, among them some quite rare Peterlongo cartridges with Roth headstamps. And just these rare things are often falling apart due to corrosion caused by unstable powder. In comparison DWM and RWS specimens are much better.

fuhrmann,
The data I have available is from the 30s to WW2 and shortly after, so it's not helpful for cartridges discontinued by that time. Since this thread is about 9.5 Peterlongo, do you happen to have a specimen of 9.5x60 in your collection?

Looking for Ballistic/loading info and substitute powder for original powder if/when we find the cartridge. It might not be one of the original Peterlongo series cartridges, like the 7x66 Vom Hofe SE was not developed by Vom Hofe, but by the successor owner of the company. BTW, check 7x66 Vom Hofe SE cases for use as donor case for 9.5 Peterlongo.
