I suspect that he may have taken more home had he been using 6 or 7 shot.

No 4 might work better on pheasant with the greater body area, what do you think Stan?

Si senor. I agree, American 6s would have been a help I think. Pattern density would be increased significantly with sufficient energy at 60 yards to kill. 4s work great on crows with a 12 and 1 1/8 oz. but a 16gram pattern of 4s at 60 yds. would be pretty sparse out of 1/2 choke, I would expect. That's not but about 70 pellets.

Fun video. Thanks.

Perhaps 6.5 shot would be the optimum payload in a .410 for game, only nobody loads it as yet.

I don't think I'd favor 6 1/2 over 7 1/2 or 8 for doves and quail. That's the largest game birds for which I typically use a .410. 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 works great at the distances I limit my gamebird shooting to. If I were to use a .410 on larger birds I'd certainly like to try some 6 1/2s, if they could be found.

My favorite load as of now is a handloaded .73 oz. payload of nickel plated 8.5s, in a roll crimped 3" Cheddite hull, at about 1150 fps. It's a sledgehammer.

FWIW, my best .410 dove results have come with 1/2 oz of hard 8s at about 1300, out of a full choke Model 42. It has been amazingly good on Eurasian Collared Doves, which are about the size of pigeons. That combo even works late season, unless it's windy.

British Woodpigeons are larger than Collared Doves, I would guess about one and a half times the body weight.

Flighting into a wood in Warwickshire I found Winchester .410 2 1/2 inch 6’s to be very effective on Woodpigeon but the ranges were close.

Stan, keep in mind that these are British cartridges and their size 6 shot would roughly equate a a US 6.67 shot size. The British size 4 in the video is roughly our size 5.

Whether it's a #4 or a #5 in a .410 load, at "high pheasant" ranges, a pigeon could fly through the holes in the pattern without being hit by one pellet.

Love the spaniel. What a fireplug of a retriever.

.

I can see how that would work fine in a OBG (one barrel gun). However, I doubt it would regulate in any of my S x S .410s.
