Ted I totally agree. Hang in there, James. I know sometimes it's hard to keep that attitude in the face of withering fire, but it's so important to try. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger, if not in body then in spirit.

My Wife and I have been hosting Thanksgiving dinner for the family since her mother passed away several years ago. I am thankful that we are, at 72 and 73 in very good health and still able to do so, but we are getting tired. Preparing dinner always goes better with a LARGE bloody Mary!!! We had 10 guests for dinner, and everyone brought a dish and or, a pie. There were many pies, pumpkin, pecan, chocolate, coconut creme, and cherry. On Friday, we had my son and his wife over for left overs .
On Sunday my Wife will make a huge Turkey Pot pie and we will finish off the left overs, I will be thankfull, AGAIN!!!

James, I am thankful your father got to live in his own house until he was 97. Few do get to live in their own house, at that age. My late father was living at home until he was almost 96 and passed after a few days in a nursing home. I was remodeling my house as fast as I could, to bring him home with me. Just a few more days and we would have made it. But he was driving, cooking and doing everything he wanted to do up until a very short time before he passed. He even had a younger girlfriend to mourn him. And I made sure every grandchild got to see him one last time before he passed. Children and grandchildren are our best legacy, the only thing that really matters. God bless you and your family. Remember there is a bit of him in every child, grandchild and friend he ever had. Gone, but a little bit still here.

Excepting the girlfriend part, sounds very much like my dad. Gave up driving his Suburban this past summer. Until last week he had never spent a night in a hospital. A little mind boggling!

Let’s see.
In 2024 I lost … James, circumstances since you posted have precluded my being able to do little more than swing by here occasionally for a quick look . I read your post last week and have thought about you since. Now as we wrap up here and prepare to head back west in the morning I want to say personally to you, “same song, different verse.” Already this year we’ve buried three of the finest friends anyone could ever have. Now a sister. And this morning my deer hunting partner is being taken out of state for a final desperate effort to turn around his advanced cancer while back east my best fly fishing pal is nearing death from the very same cancer. Yesterday was spent with my wife’s oldest sister who we know may not know us next time we’re together and first priority today, our last day here, is a long sit at the nursing home. Honestly, we could just despair. I’m glad your son is well and close. What a gift. I will not forget you as you keep vigil at your father’s bedside. I said to the grieving adult children at the graveside here that loss like this during the holidays is always extra heavy but that I have already found solace in this: standing up between the death of their mother and her burial was the first day of Advent, the Sunday of Hope. I hope it can always be just that for them and for you.

A happy thanksgiving to you all.
A little different one for us this year as we’re out of state with grieving family. The day will start with a morning trip to the nursing home to spend some time with my 98 year old aunt and then travel to the home of my wife’s last sister where a small mix of family will gather. There will be some tears but I’m confident there will be even more gratitude.
And, yes, there will be pecan pie but circumstances this year preclude my wife being able to make her specialty: Paradise Pumpkin. 😋 I sure wouldn't mind seeing the build list and spec sheet on that Paradise Pumpkin..... I have Pecan on lock down- sometimes Bourbon, sometimes rum, occasionally Kahlua or Irish cream - always molasses.
