I have to buy several hats this Christmas for family members who live in the Toledo Ohio and Upper Peninsula of Michigan area. So cold to very cold conditions of outdoor use. Lows get -10-15+ so regular hats might come up short. Can any members here give me suggestions for what they have found to be the best hats to buy or wear. I do not mind spending what I need to spend,to get what will work well and give them years of good use. I need to buy for both male and female adults and several children of both sexes. I figure several people here have figured out what works well, so I do not just buy whatever LLBean has to offer. Thanks for your help.

Stormy Kromer....but the folks in the UP already know about that company. Nice warm wool hats made to last and reasonably priced.

No doubt Ted, they are warm, but I admit to laughing when I opened the picture.

I'm no help with deep cold hats, they tend to get set down and lost. Decent beanie style hats work for me, in conjunction with the hood of my jacket, often a double hood with wool under the main jacket. It just works better that way for me, to keep wind out. Same with a decent silk material scarf, seals off the breeze around the neck, and you can snuggle down into it. It ain't easy sitting still and quiet, when the temp is well south of zero.

I've seen the Stormy Kromer hats around here in Michigan. They have some good looking hats for men, women, and children in a variety of colors and styles that work great.

Well I have lots of experience in Manitoba, down to minus 40 and usually with a serious wind and if convenience and warmth is the objective, my go to set up is a fleece type beanie that’s a fairly thick fleece. And I match that with a relatively loose (but not baggy) fleece neck gaiter or as we call them up here, neck tubes. I want the neck tube long enough I can pull it up over my nose without changing its effectiveness around my throat.

Having said that, I’ve always found that if you are properly dressed on the rest of your body…..boots and parka and mitts that can handle those kinds of temps…..then the hat /neck tube is mostly dealing with wind.

I pay around $15 to $20 Canadian each for the items I use and typically have two or three kicking around the house at any given moment.

Why just be warm when you can also use the opportunity to drive some fur nazi insane?

Howdy Karl......and as rarely seen nowadays, made in the U.S.A., specifically in the UP (Ironwood, I think). It's cold here in Indiana now and I've been wearing a very nice grey one for several days and am glad to have it. Btw, the wool blend they use is soft and supple, a cashmere like feel to it, and not scratchy.

Thanks for the suggestions. So far I have bought several hats. Bought a men's badger hat for my daughter in law. I think she would be happier if it were wolverine as she is a big buckeye fan. She loved that hat above all on the Furhatworld website when I showed it to her. Couple shearing sheepskin and other fur hats have filled needs as well. Not cheap, but quality seems good and I still like fur. I know the fur Nazis will not be happy with me. I am good with that. I do tell every PETA person who come out as PETA that PETA stands for People Eating Tasty Animals. Their meltdown is worth it.

Thanks for your help, Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays happens after the change of administrations when they start taking some of the trash out. Drain the swamp or at least put honest light on them for all to see.
