I spent 30 winters in Alaska. One had to be careful in the winter with furry hats. They attracted great horned owl. So do turkey calls in Missouri. I lost my camo hat to an owl near the edge of a lake in the northern part of the state. I was wearing it a t the time. That setup ended right then due to my yelling and attempt to run.

After clicking on Ted's link, I now get ads for these types of hats every day!
So many guns, so little time!

I worked construction and ran traplines in northern MN, ND and WI. For warm an alaskan trooper hat and everyday winter a stormy kommer.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I have 3-4 fur hats like the one Ted posted, some all fur and some with the front panel and earflaps in beaver or fox, that I wore all the time when I lived in western bush AK. Never had an issue with owls attempting to prey on my fur covered head, but if I was traipsing around calling fox or trapping, I had a tendency to overheat with the full fur hat on. It was great for running around on a sno go in -30 or colder temps with more often than not, some good stiff winds blowing.

Those Stormy Kromer caps may be warm, but they are perhaps the ugliest / silliest looking piece of head gear I have ever seen!! That little bow tie in the front is just way too much for me. But of course, to each his or her own!!

Looking good and freezing is so over rated. I'll take function over appearances every day. So they may not be manly looking to you. I want to be warm in extreme conditions when ever possible. Equipment has come generations in function from when I had to use GI wool inserts in surplus leather gloves 50 plus years ago. Those caps and hats have a proven track record under extreme conditions.

I use a wool balaclava helmet with scarf under my surplus Air Force parka hood with drawstiong. I think its trimmed with wolf skin. Best for hands I've found are British Extreme Cold Weather mitts where you can ball your hands up inside. Make you feel like a seal, but they do come off easily. Korean War Mickey Mouse boots are a must if you have to stand for any length of time. I keep all in my vehicle during our brutal ND winters.

My Woolrich down filled hat is too warm for most days in Central Maryland, but I keep it handy for those rare really cold days. KY Jon mentions the black leather Army gloves with wool inserts. I still have a couple of pairs of those and they are my go to gloves if I'm not shooting. They were issued to me at Fort Bragg 55 years ago. We were also issued the ear flapped pilot's hat, but we never wore them. I still wear mine when it is bitter cold and windy. I am still sleeping in my 1949 down filled mummy bag, also issued in 1967.
