What is this for?

Retains/Restrains the Striker or Firing Pin. There's a notch on the striker and the set screw falls right in the filed rectangle slot.

It stops the strikers falling out when the gun is cocked and the barrels elevated

I think too that it limits how for forward a worn striker will go to in an effort to restrain the striker back at lockup. Too, a spring may or may not be present. I would really like to know if & when retraction springs were applied to hammerguns. Or if they were added under repair?

I have a non-rebounding hammer gun completed March 6, 1866 that has striker springs. I don't know if they were original to the gun or a later addition, but I suspect original since the gun was not converted to rebounding locks.

Trying to keep up. So in the early days of CF SxS's..before rebounding hammers and such...the firing pins were just floating in their cylinders? And could fall forward or backwards according to the tilt of the gun? No springs? And that presumes that the firing pins would be lightly resting on the primers of the shells depending on the elevation of the gn?. Could this be used to date a gun?

This Reilly has no SN published...it has a steel nitro-proofed replacement barrel from Birmingham. But one would think if you replace a barrel from an 1860's gun, you might also update the action? Perhaps with some springs? Curious.

Yes. The beveled edge you see on extractors and ejectors, and the little concave "cutout" you see on some, are there to assist in pushing the nose of the striker rearward as the breech end of the barrels move downwards in closing, or opening in the case of the little half circle cutout, so as not to hang the bottom/top of the same on the nose of a projecting striker. Also, sometimes a gun may get hard to open due to the strikers remaining in the indentations of the shell primers, and not moving rearward as the gun is beginning to open.
