Damascus, thanks for input.

I do agree that some things do appear out of place, especially the size of a few of the dividers, if original, they are definitely not common in an English gun case, but thats also assuming this case was built in Enlgand……it could have been built or at least the interior constructed in the U.S. , who’s to know?

The answer to your cleaning rod turnbuckle is easily explained in the following pics, it is not just simply sitting there with no apparent function as you will see, as well i have provided you with a few examples of original cases from my collection that quite clearly shows additional blocks added on the top of cases to hold the barrels, these are not add-ons nor are these cases redone. You may also notice in the Purdey case that they built small sections on the lid to protect the sights as well as a block to hold the barrel.

The case in question appears to have been built to hold a single barrel gun with a large fore-end, whether purpose built or rebuilt. There is no evidence that i can see of any manipulation to the interior, again unless the whole interior was redone. Given the excellent condition of the leather and wood it remains a mystery.

As i was not there at the time, I will reserve comment on it being an amateur re-line by someone who has lost their way, it may look slightly different but from where i stand, other than the larger dividers it does not look amateurish in any way. I appreciate all comments.

I wouldn't think a cased hammergun would include a snapcap. Perhaps that gap accommodated a folding rear sight or something similar?
