Before auto-pay I had to send a monthly payment for my aunt’s nursing home. Since it was going to the St. Louis area (where I had concerns) each month I would go to our small town PO and send the check registered mail. Talking to the home’s bookkeeper one day she mentioned that I hadn’t paid the previous month’s bill. I pulled out the file where I kept all the paperwork and sure enough, I’d sent the check on time, registered mail. Our postmaster tracked it for me and gave me the direct number to the postmistress there. When I called she was less than helpful until I told her we had tracked it and it was in her post office. There was silence and then “please hold.” About 10 minutes later she came back on and said someone was on the way to deliver it right then. No explanation. No apologies. It had apparently been laying in their registered mail locker for 6-7 weeks.
