It was the way it was back then. He used to write my grandmother every day during WW2 and tell her about his fishing exploits and how damn hot it was in Key West and how everyone on the boat smelled bad. He also talked about fishing and having the cook prepare fish for him on the side.

Anyway, when I last saw him he was 92 years old and sharp as a tack. I asked him what he missed most as he was pretty much confined to a easy chair watching TV and smoking Winstons. He told me he had buried all of his hunting buddies and that what he missed most was wetting a line and swapping stories about old fishing trips and big fish that got even bigger over time. He said he wouldn't be upset when he passed as he missed damn near everybody near and dear to him. Just part of life as they say.

My favorite reason for hunting alone: there is no one to see me miss.

Snowed in last evening, it was perfect for some quiet reading. And has happened occasionally before, there was unexpected insight to be had. Speaking of community and the reality that we come to it not by intending to “commune” was this:

“C.S. Lewis described the love of friendship itself as dependent on that kind of dynamic. Friendship, he said, is not mere companionship - doing the same thing together - but it starts out that way: “Friendship must be about something, even if it were only an enthusiasm for dominoes or white mice.” He continued,

“The Companionship was between people who were doing something together - hunting, studying, painting, or what you will. The Friends will still be doing something together, but something more inward, less widely shared and less easily defined; still hunters, but of some immaterial quarry; still collaborating, but in some work the world does not, or not yet, take account of; still traveling companions but on a different kind of journey.”

Yes. Yes, indeed.

I have read something similar. Men base friendship around an activity. Even a friend who drops over for a beer the talk is about past and future activities. A good friend of mine has said his good friends are generous. generous with their time, effort and thoughtfulness. I find that quite true, I look up my friends, those who give back, when I'm planning an outing of some sort.

The same reading material indicated that women base their friendship around a whole different set of dynamics. It is not based on an activity and most often around children careening them from one activity to another. Mom is there for the child not the activity but it provides the opportunity to shoptalk with all the other moms and form friendships.

Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.
