Yeti, how do you manage to apply the Behlen's stain evenly?

Thanks for any tips.

JayCee,
I use a small ball of old t-shirt, not soaking wet, but more than damp. Use long strokes with the grain. Unlike rust blueing you can go over a streaked area again if it's still wet.

I'm posting these pics for Tom. Hopefully, he'll get enough information on this to make a good decision.

His original question: "I have a rifle that the buttstock (original) is much darker than the forearm (replacement?). I would like to try to match the color. What could I use?
Tom "

DT,
Have you stripped the buttstock yet? Wonko's Brew or Zip Strip?

Just a thought - a mild oxalic acid solution will lighten wood a bit. After stripping all the old oil, muck and mire out of the buttstock - if it's still blackish you might try to lighten it a bit and find a color match more towards the mid-range of wood hues.

Yeti,
I do not want to refinsh the buttstock. I want to leave it as is and try to make the forearm, bumps, scratches and all the same color. I guess I have to strip the forearm to do this.
Thanks, Tom

Ahh hah!
Before you strip it, try one of the spirit stains, you've got nothing to lose. I think with multiple applications, you'll get it to match. Dark Walnut from R Gale is the blackest stain.

Thanks Yeti, that is what I will try first. Now where will I find R Gale stains? I have never seen it.
Thanks again, Tom

DT, Check the Spirits link in my first post - goes right to the Brownells page.
