I have an English box lock which is exhibiting light hits on the right bbl. All the parts are in tact and nothing is missing or broken. Here is the problem.
I load 2 shells, I pull the right trigger the hammer fires but the primer does not detonate. If I fire the left bbl first and then the right the primer does fire.
If i pull the right trigger the primer does not detonate but if I open the action again re-cocking the hammers, pull the right trigger it will then detonate.
I have tried all of this scenario with the floor plate off and the stock off and it all repeats exactly the same. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

Have you encountered this problem with more than one brand of cartridges?

I had a misfiring problem (all went on second strike) and it turned out the usually well respected cartridge manufacturer had had a problem with a defective batch of primers.

dblgnfix, when trying to analyze a problem such as this, I always recommend a deep cleaning first. If it doesn't fix the problem, it might show wear or burrs causing the problem,
Mike

Der Ami, I ultra sonically cleaned the action and the parts. I removed all the parts and polished off any high spots or burrs. It isn't related to the ammo or primer seating.
It isn't the spring because it fires the shell just fine after firing the left bbl first. I am truly stumped.

If a good cleaning doesn't help, it might be that the recoil from the left barrel is pushing the shell back against the breech face. Try a putting piece of scotch tape under the rim and see if it fires. If it does the firing pin may be too short or the shells you are using have a rim that is too thin for the gun. or primers to deep, or someting else....

Yes. Maybe the rim cut is too deep.

Maybe the right firing pin is dragging on something when the left firing pin is cocked? If it only happens when the right trigger is pulled first, then something related to the left trigger or left firing pin (when cocked) is preventing the right trigger/right firing pin from hitting the primer hard enough to fire the shell.

I have become addicted to English hammered shotguns to the detriment of my wallet.
