I use un-dyed canvas that I wash in warm water to remove any filler and make it soft. The canvas is a cover for the padding I make from old wool socks which have also been washed in hot water only. This washing removes any old detergent and shrinks them to make them more cushy. My current safe rack is made from a reclaimed 150 year old oak barn timber, with all the contact points covered by the padded canvas. Working that hard old oak was challenge but I'm looking for a project that will be a bit more visible for the chunk I have left.

About 20 years ago I built a 200+ gun vault with racks as you mentioned. I used a 3/4" felt tape with a sticky backing and tape. This is made just for that purpose and is available at most hardware and woodworking stores.

The felt with adhesive backing works well. You can get it in thicker form by finding door and window insulation strips at a local lumber yard or building supply.
My word of caution concerns "flocking", used to line jewelry boxes or special drawers normally. I used it several years ago for a fancy gun cabinet on both the base plate and the rack. It forms a felt like covering and leaves no seams or lumps. Looks terrific. The downside is it will quickly affect blueing. I nearly ruined an expensive double before discovering the problem. Contact with the distributor and manufacturer for answers led nowhere. Caveat emptor.

Has anyone run into problems with the silicon sacks like the ones in Sportsman's Guide.

A couple of years ago I bought the green/grey ones from Cheaper than Dirt and found the loose threads keep catching on things like sights. I don't know if they are the same ones they sell now.

I have gotten my Sack-Ups from Midway and Shotgun Sports, and my Remington sleeves from WalMart. No snagging problems with any of them. I think I also got some from Sportsmen's Guide, no problems.
