Hey all, just curious. Who uses the above to clean the bores in your shootn iron?

I've used Mercury Quicksilver carb cleaner to get my varmint rifle bores squeaky clean. It used to be popular among bench rest rifle shooters, and was recommended by Warren Page. Lately I've been using Shooters Choice when I need a strong bore solvent. I'm not sure if the Quicksilver is still available or if the formula is the same. I think Stan is a Mercury engine guy, and he might know.

Plain old hot water is all I need for cleaning black powder guns since I switched to using T/C Natural Lube . After drying, I then give the bore a thin coat of the same bullet lube.

Many carb cleaners don't seem to be as potent as they used to be. I've found Wynn's is still pretty good for hosing down barrels before rust bluing.

I use it on carbs. It would scare me a bit on many of my guns.

Mercury still markets Quickleen and Quickcare. Both are fuel system/injector cleaners. I don't know if they are the same as the carb cleaner you mentioned. I never ran Mercurys with carbs, always injectors, so I'm not familiar with that particular product.

I'd be hesitant to get any type of carb cleaner near any wood-stocked guns. It will wreck the finish.

I have used it to clean rifle actions and gunk from old shotguns I have bought over the years, but not to clean bores as a regular cleaner. It might help get the plastic out of my semi-automatic shotgun. I hadn't thought of it. I recently used it to try and clean the bolts of a couple a 22lrs that were misfiring, but I ended up increasing the firing pin strength on each.

It looks like this fool has spent the morning huffing carburetor cleaner, so it may be on topic. His response here is worse than the final play of last night's NCAA Championship game.

I use Jet Spray Gumout to clean the bronze brushes I clean my shotguns with, followed by a blast of compressed air. Conventional bore solvents, I think I’m using Remington labeled products, this month, seem to be just fine. Just removed some gun cleaning products from my Dads gun cabinet, my brother won’t be cleaning any guns in the future.

A couple times in my life, somebody has shown up with a gun that “don’t work”, and asked me to look at it. Usually a pump or auto that has ceased being a repeater. I can’t believe how filthy some guys let their guns get. Those guns got the wood removed and the metal parts dunked in Berryman dip type carb solvent. It will not harm bluing or case colors, but, I wouldn’t get it anywhere near wood or plastic. Boiling the metal parts in a stainless steel pot on the camp stove gets rid of the stench of the carb cleaner, and leaves everything dry and ready to be lubed, and reassembled.

I just cleaned lawnmower carburator with that stuff. It would probably be ok to use inside of barrels but may take a toll on certain gun finishes.
The Chinese carburator was mostly plastic so the stuff might not be that harsh, however, one must remember Glock frames are made out of plastic so that stuff can be quite tough and durable

Just don't understand why anyone would need anything that harsh to clean a shotgun?
Do some clean their guns once every five years whether they need it or not?
