Gene Hill gives us plenty of opportunity for discussion and disagreement in this collection of his.

From chokes …

“The perfect two-barrel choke borings for virtually all bird hunting are light improved-cylinder and tight-modified. Trust me! Not bad for a duck gun either in these days of steel shot. For a single-barrel gun: improved cylinder.”

… to dogs …

“The Labrador retriever is, arguably, the most perfect example of the kindness and compassion of the Almighty. Eve wasn’t bad either, mind you, but just think about it…”

…to shot.”

“The best all-around shotgun shell is a No. 7 1/2. Number 7s are even better, but only all of Europe and Great Britain know that.”

Have at it, boys.

Those come fairly close to perfection in my mind.

Id say he is off by one on shot size and dog and he could have concluded that 12 gauge is the only gauge one needs.

Size 6 shot is better all-around. Hill loved his woodcock. 7.5 would be better all around if they're a major target.
Labs are great dogs, but I like setters better.

Hill's observations are much more agreeable to me than M. McIntosh's laughable statement years ago that choke boring was obsolete.

However, it's mostly a moot observation, since there are so many choices available that choosing one is mostly a waste of time.

Kinda reminds me of the well worn question . . . . "If you could only have one shotgun . . . . .".

May God bless America and those who defend her.

Get lots of guns with different choke configurations. Use the set up appropriate for the day, the terrain and the quarry.

I’m never looking for a one thing that does it all. Where’s the fun in that?

Do you have a double set up like that?

I’d pay admission to see it….
