Was very fortunate to acquire, after a lengthy bidding frenzy, a 1914 Ferlacher A&D Body Action in 24 X 24 and a Biks in 24 X 222 Rem as of 1966 and it looks to have been a 5.0+mm in 1914. What Rimmed 22 kaliber would an Auerhahn / Capercaillie Hunter have preferred @ the onset of WWI??

Too, I am curious as to the top rib cuts on the Scattergun tubes and the type scope mounts on the Cape/Biks.

I really like how the forend lever is addressed with a skosh bit more thickness.

The 24(69mm) X 24(69mm) tubeset is stamped 1140 grammes & my Trusty, Dusty, Rusty Kat Certified Kitchen Scales measures 1107 grammes.

The 24(69mm) X 222 Rem. tubeset is stamped 1598 grammes and Trusty, Dusty, Rusty Kat Certified Kitchen Scales measures 1520 grammes.

The original 22 chambering must have been 22 WCF? But why switch to 222 Rrem. being a rimless cartridge?

I believe that at one time the 222 Rem was minimum for Roe deer.

The filled cut outs look like they were for claw mounts quite common to see.

I've seem a drilling with the 9.3x 72 relined to 222 rimmed also.

It looks like a dandy piece. I would reload for it and keep the charges mild. Twist is probably 1-16 and flatbase bullets 50gr and under should be accurate. You should be able to shoot rimless 222s in it but pry the brass out, then resize to make sure the headspace is close. I would stay away from Hornady Super Performance ammo. European break action 222s have generous chamber dimensions, reloading isn't a big deal and they want ammo to chamber easily. My Valmet chamber is very long and I have to size them .010 long to prevent case separations.

You can make brass from 5.6x50R or buy Bertram, I would anneal Bertram brass before using, my one experience with their 6.5x 58R brass found it quite brittle(necks splitting on first loading untill I annealed before first loading).

You can also make brass from 357 Maximum but it comes up a bit short.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Raimey,
I agree with 22WCF as original caliber, later 5.6x35R Vierling was the same case, loaded with jacketed bullets at a higher velocity (There is an article in WAIDMANNSHEIL about the relationship between 22WCF, 5.6x35R Vierling. and 5.6X36R/22 Hornet). I seem to remember from the course I took for the German hunting license that a Roe legal cartridge case had to be longer than 36mm which would rule out 22WCF, etc. This was in 1971, and it changed shortly after that to a minimum of 100 M/Kg (now 1000 Newtons) for Roe, which established 222 as the minimum. If your chamber is cut with a rim recess, let me know if you intend to use 5.6x50R cases and need some.
Re. oskar's experience with long chambers for rimmed cartridges, I have similar experience and now I set all my sizing dies to just "kiss" the case shoulder, to prevent setting the shoulder back every time it is fired. The Nosler 60 grain Partition bullet is Simi- Spitzer and shorter than a 50 grain spitzer, so they shoot well in my 5.6x50R and I have taken Whitetail (Alabama size) with it. The partition might shoot in your rifle, and it is worth checking.
Mike
Raimey,
After checking, I see your chamber is not cut for a rimmed case, and I can just see the end of a spring-loaded pin extractor, let me know if you need 222 cases. BTW, the scope mount bases seem to be either EAW or Recknagel swing mounts and New England Custom Guns can likely set you up with rings,
Mike

There is a 222Rimmed now, a later Australian cartridge used mostly in re-barreled Martini Cadets. Your rifle will likely work with rimless cases. The 5.6x50R was developed by DWM, at the request of Heym because they had trouble with their Mod 22S extracting 222 Remington Magnum cases. The "Magnum" was very popular, at the time for Roe hunting, and they wanted a cartridge that was rimmed and ballistically equal. The first version was a 5.6x47R but they decided on a 50 mm case for advertising reasons. This is why the 5.6x50R was loaded with a 50-gr bullet, like the Magnum, instead of the 55-gr bullet of the later and also popular .223 Rem. Walter Grass was the Meister in "Hunting Division" of Heym at the time this was going on, but I don't remember him saying they had trouble with the Mod 22S in 222 like they did with the Magnum. The rimmed designation would be assumed.

Good Eye Ford, your Good Eye for Sure.

What measurements do I need to ask for a set of side spring mounts? Are they standardized?

Or can I just send a foto?
