Thanks all for the Great Info on 222 Remington & the 222 Remington Rand(Aussie).

So I assume this is a True Auerhahn / Capercaillie Tool?

Anyone comment on the 2 cuts in the top rib on the 24(69mm) X 24(69mm) tubeset? What type of sighting platform?

Overall, never have I handled a pre-WWII Anson & Deeley Body Action(A&D) Borovlje Biks / Ferlacher Cape. Now I am the custodian of a hammergun in 24 X 500 Express but the Austro-Hungarian / Bohemian Hunters held hard & fast to tradition and they just didn't want to trust any platform but exposed hammers & a fixed Lefaucheux type forend fastner with a metal buttplate. Although they did cozy up to a removable forend maybe by WWI????

Raimey,
You can send photo, and they might ask you to measure the dovetail for the rear ring. They might ask you if there is a difference in the elevation of the two bases. They may ask you to send them the barrels. I don't know if the gun was intended for Auerhahn, but it would be a pretty good bet.

This combination set has seen quite some modification.

The original rifle caliber is anyone's guess, may have been around 5 mm (.22 WMR/ 5.6x35R Vierling as mentioned, or 5,2x34R Kronprinz, or some 6,5mm Tesching cartridge, or something even larger).
The outside contour of the rifle barrel may give an indication.
Now I have no experience in hunting capercaillie, only stories from Dad and Granddad. In Austria and Germany Capercaillie cocks were hunted only during mating season, the bird normally sitting in a tree. If possible the shotgun barrel was used, and I am in doubt about using a 24 gauge; not much payload for a large bird.

The original purpose of the gun may have been for "Schonzeit" (quiet season) or for a lady?

When the .222 rem. insert barrel was installed in the 1960s, that Capercaillie plate was probably added to the pistol grip as an adornment, the Schwenkmontage and the rubber recoil pad come from the same time, or even later.

The 24 ga shotgun barrel set may have been with a Wiener Schnäppermontage, funny thing for a shotgun at that time.

Interesting info & supposition.

Indeed, the pistol grip, side-swing scope mounts & buttplate were added in the 1960s. The buttplate pushes the LOP out to 37.5cm. But the worn preliminary datastring for the 22 tube looks to read >>5.0<<. The 24 X 24 tubes have seen quite a bit of use. For all the 24 tubes, the original custodian must have been pushing something other than shot.

It may have been that of a Lady but the 24 X 24 tubeset had a sighting system and it doesn't look to have an odd rifling or such. And it looks to have been removed possibly in the modification as the purpose for the sighting system had passed. Plus the weight of both tubesets are somewhat close to proof.

Although not an impossibility, but has anyone heard of a two-barrel set ordered by a Lady during WWI?

And another question that begs, would a Lady have abandoned tradition and ordered an A&D Body Action 2 Barrel set in 1914? Were Ladies that far advanced in technology over their male counterparts?

Alright, let's go on the premise of an order being placed in Ferlach in 1914 by a Boy or Lady for an Anson & Deeley Body Action, 2 Barrel set of 24 & 22(Generic?). Again, why would they have abandoned tradition for the new fangled A&D Body Action? How much would something like that have cost @ the onset of WWI? Wouldn't it have been an affluent client, so why is it devoid of a Crown or Monogram?

I guess the Ferlach Proof Facility has the answers? I would really like to know the mechanic involved.

But I guess the Big Puzzle is the sight mounting system on the 24 X 24 tubeset?

If any addition fotos will garner some info, I will gladly provide them.

If it was ordered for a boy or lady, that doesn't mean it was ordered by the boy or lady. It would have likely been ordered by the dad/husband. It wouldn't be unusual for the maker to recommend a "modern" action type to a buyer. Anyway, I'm not so sure it was for a boy or lady, fuhrmann's idea that it was for the "Schoenzeit" has merit also. I haven't opined about the filler blocks in the shotgun rib until now because to my mind they are too narrow to have been for a proper scope mount. A workman like mounting would not depend on the soft soldered rib for support, rather a wider section of the rib would have been cut out and a "sattel" would have been soldered to the barrels (wider solder joint) to support the mounting against recoil. Recently, there have been double barrel shotguns imported from the "Ost Zone" with telescopes mounted. I believe this was to hunt hooved game with slugs during Communist occupation when rifles were restricted. Slugs in a 24 gauge wouldn't be especially useful. On the other hand, it is possible that a less skilled workman installed narrow dovetails to mount a scope (for slugs or shot) and discovered the error of his ways (or the next owner did) and abandoned the idea. This is all speculation, but it is not speculation to believe you will have a great time with this gun, the new pup and your boys.
Enjoy,
Mike

Thanks to Jani for thumbing thru pre-WWI catalogues as there actually were similar selections for Lads & Laides and things were less dire just before WWI as more than Nobility & Affluent had spare funds. The adornment is modest & it doesn't wear a Crown or Monogram so for the most part it was destined for a Commoner.

With the rubber pad addition, it puts the LOP to say 37.5 cm and @ 5 lbs & 14 oz, it is truly a wand.
