I believe that at one time the 222 Rem was minimum for Roe deer.

The filled cut outs look like they were for claw mounts quite common to see.

I've seem a drilling with the 9.3x 72 relined to 222 rimmed also.

It looks like a dandy piece. I would reload for it and keep the charges mild. Twist is probably 1-16 and flatbase bullets 50gr and under should be accurate. You should be able to shoot rimless 222s in it but pry the brass out, then resize to make sure the headspace is close. I would stay away from Hornady Super Performance ammo. European break action 222s have generous chamber dimensions, reloading isn't a big deal and they want ammo to chamber easily. My Valmet chamber is very long and I have to size them .010 long to prevent case separations.

You can make brass from 5.6x50R or buy Bertram, I would anneal Bertram brass before using, my one experience with their 6.5x 58R brass found it quite brittle(necks splitting on first loading untill I annealed before first loading).

You can also make brass from 357 Maximum but it comes up a bit short.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.
