I am new to this forum. As a matter of fact this is my first post with a plea for help. I have been bequeathed a beautiful old Charles Daly 10 ga. double. Only problem is the stock is broken in two at the wrist. An old repair is evident but didn't hold. I would very much like to shoot the gun but it first must have a new stock. Can anyone recommend someone who does this? I know it will be expensive but I need it done. Thanks everyone.I am looking forward to conversing with everyone.

Welcome to the Forum.

I will leave it to members on your side of the pond to recommend a good stocker.

Would you consider a professional repair that can be done at less cost, retain the original wood, and be virtually invisible?

This is an option, and the repair can be as strong as new wood. There are pros here who can deliver this.

Welcome!

Repair maybe very viable if correctly done and the old wood is always nice to keep if that is possible. I have broken a few. All but one survived.

I will send you message in a moment.

Pictures would give us some idea of whether it is repairable.

If it cannot be repaired, which I agree with Stan and the Prof is preferable if doable, a restock should be considered very carefully. A few points to ponder:

The gun should be in excellent condition.
Pick a real artisan for the work. You won’t regret it.
Don’t use sub-grade wood to save money. Always go big with wood. No American or Claro on a Prussian Daly.
Be sure of the dimensions.
Prepare mentally now for the price tag and your expectations of the end product.
JR

Addendum:
If Dennis Earl Smith, aka The Stock Doctor, is taking on new work, he is the go-to guy for stock repairs. A real wizard with stocks that appear to be a lost cause.

Usually lots of comments on this subject, JHolland. Looks like you're on your own here for the most part. I failed to mention a wonderfully gifted talent whose first name is Claudio. Claudio is in Goodwood, Ontario, don't remember his last name. Phone 905-642-8164

Yes it would appear so. I was so hoping I could get a name of someone who would do this at a reasonable cost. The stock doctor's prices are just unreal. Thanks for the contact in Canada but I just waited 12 weeks to get a barrel blank from there and I don't think you can send any guns or parts in or out. I did find one place that would duplicate the original to a fairly close match or at least he said he could. I am not a stock maker and I hate wood work but for the money involved I may just tackle it myself.

Give Dan May a call, Classic Gunstocks, near Rochester, NY. He is busy for sure but send him photos. He has fixed several cracked stocks for me. Google his web site.

Good luck.
