Steve, that term "assisted opening and closing" is a good one. On some Jones underlevers the return of the Jones lever from fully open to closed is a bit awkward. That stud on the Reilly is helpful, especially when closing the barrel when it brings the lever closer to the closed position. This makes it much easier to close the gun. A couple of the "studless" guns I tried accomplished the same "assisted closing" of the Jones lever with a mechanism that I could not see without disassembly.
