My local gunsmith charges $80 per hour and he is essentially a part changer. He has more work then he can do and has a part time retired roofer help with certain things such as strip and clean etc etc. He owns a nice home and lots of toys. You won't get rich, but you will do quite well. Kinda like a plumber as far as rates go I guess.

Plumbers start at 150.00 an hour now! I would expect a gunmaker to be 200.00

I am an amateur machinist with my dad's old metal working lathe in my basement (last patent dates on it are from the 1890's), I have a milling machine from the 1970's. I've found that I can do a lot of woodworking on these machines as well as metal working. If you still have access to a shop, you might find it a good starting project to try to make your own forends. I hope that you will enjoy this thread, this is not my work, but the work of retired professional machinist. LRF's project

You know I don't understand. JHolland You are correct, you don't understand, J. You are asking for something that does not exist anymore, which is artisanal work done on the cheap, with the word cheap being used to describe your mindset on cost. I highly recommend you do what Michael Little suggested and try whittling out a stock yourself. That process will bring understanding. JR

I agree. If I can make space shuttle parts you would think I could inlet a stock. As far as being cheap I know the difference between cheap and gouging someone. One guy quoted me 3000.00 to fit a stock. Now come on 3000.00 to carve a little wood. That is gouging someone in my book. Sorry folks I worked damn hard for a lot of years as a machinist. I have mill and lathe at home and have done work for local folks and If I charged them the rates being discussed here they would laugh. Everyone has their opinion and I respect them but my opinion is these guys are gouging folks. If I can't do it i'll just throw it in the pond...

$3000 is cheap my guy, like 1990’s cheap. Like minimum wage in liberal state cheap.

Everyone has their opinion and I respect them but my opinion is these guys are gouging folks.JHolland As someone on another shooting bulletin board says "you can have your own opinion but you can't have your own facts". In the real world your opinion carries no weight - the fact is that a quality restock will cost around $3,000.

I appreciate the fact that you think it’s too much money and it may seem that way until you actually try doing it. Be sure to post the pictures. I’m sure we’d all love to see your stock maybe some progress photos as you work on it as they say everybody else his job seems easy
