Hello all

I have been given an old WC Scott & Sons shotgun.

It needs a lot of TLC and attention: checkering has gone, finished in lacquer, unsoldered ribs, and more... But it is a good base.

I am unfamiliar with Scott guns and would like to know more about the year of manufacture, model, etc.

I am sure here are Scott experts that can give me information.

For starters, you will want to get your hands on the book on the subject: "The History of W. & C. Scott Gunmakers
By J. A. Crawford and P. G. Whatley
It contains a lot of photos which will help you Identify which model you have.

Serial number indicates manufacture in 1898.

Whitworth Steel barrels are always an indication of high quality.

Which fits the original proof marks of 1896-1904 and likely with 2 1/2" chambers
The R bore was 12 = .729" - .739"
L was (I think) 13/1 = .719" - .728"
The Spanish proof date code A*2 is 1981, after slight honing to 18.6 mm = .732. What is the chamber length now?
I believe the 2 stars indicates Improved Modified choke. One star would be Full.
It was proved at 900 kg/cm2 for a service load of about 9500 psi

Cornell Pubs has an 1899 catalog repro. It might be available as a PDF and would show the model
https://www.ebay.com/itm/291034041363

It appears that the top rib extension, and possibly the barrel hanger, were reattached at some point.

Does anyone here have this book? If I gave you a serial number, would there be anything about it in the book?

Thanks @Parabola. Your date 1898 is based in a serial number list you have, or by similarity to an existing number you have already dated???

I suppose archives for this company are not available, or a museum or foundation has the records to ask for info as with Holland or Purdey??

Stamp in red???
Patent in yelow???

I will get those catalogues, thanks

The ribs are unsoldered. I think they made an acid bluing, that destroyed the soft solder, that is why they are loose.

re: the Spanish marks, I don't find the mark in red on the action flats here
Yes, the marks in yellow are Scott's patent. I can't read the date or number.

I appears to be a flag on a castle? It may be the mark of the importer, who could have been a gun maker?

The stars on the barrels are not a proof house mark and frequently found, having been placed by the maker, indicating choke.
1 star = full, 2 = improved modified, 3 = modified, 4 = improved cylinder, 5 = cylinder
