I have a couple of rifles where there is a pop-up peep/aperture sight inletted into the stock behind the action. I am wondering how these were intended to work. Were they supposed to be an actual peep sight in the Lyman sense or more of a 'focusing device' that sharpens the sight picture, similar to a pin hole camera?

Thank you!

If a rear ocular(Aufklappbares Diopter Visier oder Loch Visier) on an Austrian or German platform, there looks to be a spiderweb like in the early glass Surveying Instruments. I have chased it for a time with little results.

Thank you Raimey. These have no glass nor 'spiderweb'. They are a simple aperture on a pop-up stem. Here's a couple of photos of the one mounted on a Steyr.

Look really close, maybe even w/ loupe. It would be odd, but possible, that there aren't some type of >>crosshairs<< in there.

Using the rear ocular increases the sight radius; hence the accuracy of the POI.

Hoot,
These devices are not used as the rear sight; they are used with the normal rear sight to "sharpen" the sight picture. They are sometimes confused with an "ocular" which does have glass but does not qualify as a telescope. Schuetzen rifles are not allowed to have telescopes mounted but older shooters sometimes use an "ocular" to allow them to focus on the front sight, without magnification. An "ocular" is rigidly mounted on the Schuetzen rifle and does not fold back into the stock. The devices in question would be used on hunting rifles. As always, I might be mistaken.

I always was of the opinion that they were an eye focus instrument, not a peep sight.
To be used with the rifles existing front and rear(bbl) sights.

The idea makes it possible for the shooter to have the target, front and rear sight all in focus at the same time.

Same idea as the Merit Disc that many Bullseye Pistol shooters used back when that was popular. Especially the older shooters that had
problems focusing on the front sight,,,or either sight actually.

They still make these and they have a nice explanation of the principle in the ad.
I think the Merit had a non magnifying 'lens' in them, but not really sure now.

The folding ones I have had have been the barrel sight sharpening kind. This one has considerable capability for horizontal and vertical adjustment so who knows.

Thank you for your thoughts guys! Kind of where my head was at as well. The one shown has a very small aperture as...in .030"...and my 'smith and I are discussing whether or not to open it up. I might lose a bit of 'depth of field' but it's so tiny right now as to be difficult to use at all.
