I would like to add a full length barrel insert to my Funk drilling. Barrel length is 25 5/8 inches, 12 ga. I would like it to be adjustable at the muzzle. I have a 16 ga same barrel length if necessary as well. Questions: 1. Is it possible to have an 8x57 JR insert to match the caliber of the drilling. If not, what is a reasonable alternative? 2. Will the action (two underlugs plus Greener crossbolt) be sufficient for the pressure since it will be in an upper shotgun barrel? 3. Can I order from Europe and have it shipped without ffl because it is only a barrel and not a complete firearm? 4. Do any of you have a suitable one to sell? 5. Is there any other advice you could give to help me succeed in this endeavor? Thank you all, and glad to be back online after a long absence!

Steve, There are 2 or 3 makers of full length einstecklaufs that make (or made) them in calibers up to 9.3x74R. As a general rule though, they wouldn't install one larger than 6.5x57R in a drilling (the larger calibers could be installed in 0/Us). Exceptions to the general rule had to be approved on a case-by-case basis (depending on action type and condition). I am not sure if you can order one for installation by the shooter, or not. If sold to a German and delivered there, it would have to be proofed before delivery. If I were contemplating a full length einstecklauf for one of my drillings, I think I would choose 5.6x 50R, with the possible exception of 6.5x57R for my 6.5x57R drilling. The choice of caliber is a highly personal thing. You might talk to George at T&G Gun Imports (www. German Gun Imports.com) about helping you find what you want. It is nice to have you back, Steve. I ordered an 8X57 JRS barrelx to be installed in a 16 ga drilling’s right shotgun. barrel. It had to be proofed in Germany. And an import permit was required to bring it to the US. It was made specifically for my gun. It installed with no trouble but after a few shots the insert barrel started rivelling, showing plastic deformation. The insert was destroyed and the maker refunded my cost. After that only rimfire and 22 centerfire inserts were used. I have several for sale in 22 rimfire and 22 Hornet for 12 ga.

He ordered forseeable damage, he got it. In fact, he got rather lucky if only the Einstecklauf was damaged, rather than the gun, which would have been far more expectable from the outset.
The makers of these muzzle-long insert barrels are very clear and very specific as to which insert cartridges are at all suitable, and which not. See the choice of calibers and the warnings on Keller & Simmann's website. I could only think of two locking systems of a Drilling that would at all be thinkable for such a cartridge, and neither is common.

Actually, thank you, Carcano. Investigating further on European website blogs reveals the same advice you are giving, with one gunshop stating that they will not install an einstecklauf larger than .22 Hornet, "even if it costs them business." Fair enough, but it should also be stated that over on this side of the pond, such things are not common knowledge and are largely unknown. When a manufacturer advertises such wares, the temptation is to think that they are suitable for use! The warnings/experiences of others indicate that that is not the case. Many, myself included, could dream of a double rifle option on the cheap which just does not exist in practical application. It would be a service to all to have these guidelines/cautions spelled out for the instruction of any who might be considering utilizing an appropriate caliber einstecklauf. Not so helpful to criticise if "the calf is already out the gate." Could you mention for us which locking systems on drillings are appropriate for larger calibers? I don't recall seeing the warning on the Keller & Simmann's website--maybe they should make it more clearly seen?

Reread my previous posting. Actually, an einstecklauf as a solution to a desire for a double rifle may have merit for some drillings. As I recall, Hans Zimmerman offered them in older calibers which were typically low pressure. Some cartridges I recall were 6.5x52R (25-35 Win.), 8x58R Sauer& Sohn, 8x57R-360, 9.3x72R, etc. Hans has since retired, but as I understand, he turned the company over to his son and son-in-law, I hope he is still living but considering his age I doubt it. He was the first one to offer full length einstecklaufs with adjustment at the muzzle. Mike

My insert was made by Zimmerman. The external dimensions of the insert were just too small to handle 8X57JRS. To clarify, the insert didn’t fail while shooting. But I could see it was going to happen so I cut the insert into little pieces. It didn’t harm the host drilling in any way.
Now my maximum insert caliber is 22 Hornet. If I wanted a larger rifle caliber I would choose a permanent liner in a shotgun barrel.
I just bought a 16X16X6.5X58R Meffert drilling. My plan is to line the 6.5 barrel to 22 Magnum. It will be my small game gun.
