Sorry to bother you, but I’m curious - what exactly is this Swag thing all about?
Just so you know, I ended up spending €1,800 on it! Whether it turns out to be worth it or not, I’m honestly not too worried about it… but shh, let’s keep that between us - don’t tell my wife! 🤣

I'm no expert of proofs, particularly French proofs but I'm assuming Fab is basing that re-test remark about post 1960 from specific proofs marks he is identifying.
I have no experience with early Ideals using Damascus barrels. So no first hand knowledge of the markings you ask about, except to assume they relate to the barrels or to the action those barrels were originally fitted to. And I don't think those are chopper lump barrels so I'm in agreement the construction aligns with fig 2.
The forend latch appears (no clear pic) to be the standard latch they used on extractor models on all the post 1910 guns I have experience with. I've owned Ideals that date from 1911 to the early 1960s. All were extractor guns except for the one I have kept...a 1921 gun model 7RE-C Perfection. Whether it turns out to be worth it or not, I’m honestly not too worried about it… but shh, let’s keep that between us - don’t tell my wife! 🤣 Simi Wild Ass Guess = swag and pertaining to wives' - on another website (shotgun world - https://www.shotgunworld.com/)....one of the regulars uses as his signature line - "my wife lets me buy all the guns i can hide" and i'm hopeful that one of our french translators will do us the service of rendering fab's comments into english - i am always eager to understand what he knows about these guns. if my scant knowledge is correct, fab has inquired as to the barrel construction of james' ideal perfection? my ideal perfection has two sets of serial numbers; each marked on both barrels and action, the first number, upside down on the breech face is 26331 = 1906. the second number is 2437; this gun has the "mf directors stamps" and based on something fab500 has written in the past, i believe the second number is a registry number for mDf guns. this gun is definitely chopper lump barrels, although polished to the point of being difficult to see except behind the ejectors - they are "acier hercule trempe", with 5 laurels, and "fabrication mechanique". this gun was proofed for 7 cm shells - which is securely inside gene's uncertain cut-off date for cm's being replaced by mm's. my ideal 5S is serial numbered 60782 = 1928, "acier hercule" with 4 laurels, and stamped both "fabrication mechanique", and "fabrication demi-bloc". i will also comment on the incredibly precise and orderly proof marks and legends on lamanu guns; everything marked is straight and perfectly uniform, even when it is so small that i often need a magnifying glass to be certain of the content. as always, i enjoy opportunities to study and learn about these fine guns.

GB, My Perfection has chopper lump barrels (5 laurels), as have been the other 6 Ideals I have owned, as well as the 5 barrels that my friend Wingshooter16 had for his two Ideal 16 gauge guns. All were fluid steel. Would love to see pics of your Perfection.

Well, bringing this thread back to the top as the gun has just returned from Newf's workshop having had the wood refinished and the crap old pad replaced with a beautiful carved horn butt plate that brings the LOP to a perfect 14 1/4" for me. The final project for this gun, currently in the works, is a second barrel and forend set. Original barrels, made in 1919, are MF 5 palm 29" choked IM and full. The second set, also made in 1919, are factory original and untouched 4 palm 25". The chokes will be opened to yet to be decided grouse/woodcock chokes, a perfect complement to the original IM and full. Salut, Les registres de la Manu conservés aux Archives de la Loire commencent vers les années 1912. Votre Idéal Perfection est donc trop ancien pour apparaître sur la liste. Pour le numéro 5, je n'ai pas la liste pour pouvoir vérifier.

After reading Martin Godio's book and several emails back and forth to clarify different points, he concluded mine is a 7RE-C Perfection. My original thought 12 years ago was that it was a 6RE-E.
