Welcome to the forum, AvSec!

6183 does not appear to be shown as a recorded number in what remains of Green’s records, BUT he did not always write the number down against all the guns shown in what seems to have been the Order Book for the Cheltenham shop.

If you have the original owner’s name or initials from the case or butt oval it might be possible to cross reference an unnumbered entry?

A description of your gun, bore and lock type would assist.

6182 is shown in January 1901 so that gives you an approximate date.

Parabola, thanks for the prompt response and welcome!
My apologies for my tardy reply.

I was given the gun by a friend who has stopped shooting and it’s going to a Scottish estate where they have an established pheasant and partridge shoot.

It’s a 12 bore box lock. The barrels have been sleeved at sometime in its life but the action is tight and is in excellent condition.

As far as I can see there are no marks to give away the original owners name but it was probably a resident of Dorset or Somerset. This is because my friend bought it in Sherborne in the early 1950s.

I shall get some photos of it next week

I’m not sure if that link works but perhaps a Moderator could adjust to show the images?

The SHOT 1 1/8 (or 1 1/4?) OZ MAXm indicates the original proof was 1896-1904
It was reproved 1954 - 1989 and the arrow is the date of proof code after sleeving. If VB that would be 1970 and was proved at 3 TONS which would be for a max. service load of about 9000 psi

Drew,
Thank you so much for that very detailed and prompt response!

The original date bracket of 1896-1904 fits in with the information given by Parabola above; namely, its predecessor, 6182, was shown in January 1901.

I hope that it will be used in anger by my son next month; I’m left handed and left-eyed and prefer to shoot 20 bore these days. A lighter gun and certainly a lighter cartridge bag!

Tony,

Thanks for the photos, a nice gun but nothing particularly distinctive to aid identification.

I have had a look at my copy of the records. No reference to 6183 but a couple of entries after 6182 (mind you, the numbers dodge back and forth over a couple of years entries) there is an A&D gun that could be yours.

That gun was made for Dr. W. Wilkins, West Derby, Liverpool at a price of 15 Guineas plus leather case (embossed WW) for £1/15/- extra.
