Hello DGS

I am new to the forum and is in search of any informations regarding this shotgun that I've purchased. The only name i ever find on it is on the barrels, where it will say new barrels fitted by H.Adkins and Sons 57 High Street, Bedford.

On the stock it has both a Birmingham view proof and a London house view proof.

Hopefully someone can give me some insight on the shotgun, ill post the pictures I have, showing also the patent number for the ejector and a three digit number, which is the only number i can find, is this the serialnumber? The placing on the forehand grib seems rather odd to me.

The London view mark and the wording “New Barrels fitted by..” suggests that Adkins was not the original maker, but that it came from a London gunmaker and that the barrels needed replacing.

Perhaps other Forum makers will be able to recognise the likely original maker.

There is sometimes a lock makers name stamped on the inside of the lockplates, but specialist lock makers like Brazier, Chilton and Stanton made locks for many different gunmakers.

It was re-barreled in Birmingham in 1953 .J Ross 1890 patent 19395 ejector work .The 574 could be the number of the ejector made under that patent .

As the action is unsigned I would assume that it was a gun made to be sold out to the provincial trade and engraved up as the seller.At the time of manufacture there were little or no requirements for record keeping or gun serial numbers .As a note to this I have had similar guns to which I have made and marked guns with an ID number to meet current UK law .

Could not open the photos. I have a Henry Adkin, SLE, 12 30” Damascus barrels, with Adkin’s name on the locks and name-address on the rib. It has SN 182, stamped on the underside barrel rib, and of course both BP and NP BIrmingham marks for 2&1/2” It is lively, handles like dream, was little used, with original case color, clean bores, and barrel brown. My understanding of Adkin is that they were a provincial maker and manufactured around 2000 guns, SL and BL. Whoever ordered this must have wanted above average wood because the stock is honey colored and smokey with distinct mineral lines. Weighs 6 Lbs 5 oz.

I have a 16 bore Adkin hammergun with great wood as well.

Here’s a thread on Ross Patent ejectors. Having worked on a gun fitted with this system, where the ejectors weren’t working correctly ….I don’t think I’d buy another gun that is fitted with this system. I did finally get the ejectors working right, but it was a tough job!
