Vaughen"
Gesamtlänge 107 cm
Laufänge 67 cm, leicht rau “
Forced Translation:
>>The left-hand trigger opens the bolt. Steel receiver. Two overhead hammer locks with rearward-loading springs and an underhammer lock for the under-loading rifle barrel. The locks are cocked by pushing the ring trigger forward.
Barrel hook locking mechanism with additional doll's head. The bolt should be checked for play by a gunsmith, as the weapon is over 100 years old.
The weapon features a dark walnut stock with Kentucky-style checkering, a patch box, and a deep buttplate. On the right side of the stock is an inlaid "GW Vaughen" plaque.
Total length 107 cm
Barrel length 67 cm, slightly rough<<

I think I now found out the destinatary of the gun (presumably not the buyer, but the recipient of a gift of appreciation - or an ostentatious bribe from a robber baron, which is more likely here). Because George W(alter) Vaughn [* 1829, + 1906] was a nationally famous and esteemed, also very influential US railway engineer, and his zenith of reputation and activity is loacted almost exactly at the estimated production date of this gun. Impressive pedigree: https://accessgenealogy.com/illinois/biography-of-george-w-vaughn.htmGrave: https://de.findagrave.com/memorial/148681415/george_walter-vaughnThe gun looks quaint (more of a heirloom and boasting piece for the "gentlemen's parlour" than a real hunting gun, which Vaughn will have already had and well used), and it also appears too fresh or refreshed. The small barrel's assumed caliber ".32 Remington" is hardly credible either, given the distinctly later date of ineption (around 1906) of this autoloader cartridge. An esteemable curio, made by a talented inventor and tinkerer, I would say. The apparent, misinterpretable indication "Bryan Willliams Co." actually means: "village [now city] of BRYAN in WILLIAMS COunty, Ohio". The producer there was William Folk, Folk's Gun Works. The style, unusual for a Drilling, is 100 %& consistent, nigh identical with their other old-fashioned quality guns: https://www.gunsinternational.com/g...omestead-long-rifle.cfm?gun_id=102398113The German auction by Hermann Historica in 2013 raised its price from 1200 € (start) to 1300 € (fall of gavel), plus 25 % auctioneer's premium. :-D Carcano

I’ve never met anybody who hunts squirrels with a 45-70 Government.
There are/were prohibitions in Europe on civilians owning military cartridge chambered rifles. Not sure how this one flew under the radar.
Best, Ted

Well, we have exceptional size Squirrels here in the Deep South, namely the Gray and the Fox Squirrel, which may grow to fox size? And when you consider the heights of the Long Leaf Pine and the Northern Red Oak, both of which can approach something similar to the Empire State Building, you really need something to reach UP and get them. Although a Fox Squirrel, due to his size, likes to lope across the land like a Gazelle.

Lovely, lovely bit of Fantastic Sleuthing there 7,35 Carcano. I must tip my hat. What was you clue for searching, additional fotos.... I do wonder why we haven't seen more Ohio Rifle Works Triple Rifle Alabama Squirrel Guns by William Folk here in the U.S. of A.???? Another question that begs is that of Folk being German??

Like Carcano, I also dispute the bottom barrel being chambered for .32 Remington. In addition to the date of inception, the 32 Remington is not a rimmed cartridge. The 32-40 Ballard/Winchester would be a more likely cartridge of this general size, but I believe most likely would be one of the smaller, now obsolete, straight cased 32 caliber cartridges. Possibly there were some of the correct cartridges with the rifle at one time, if they were loaded by Remington, that could have caused the confusion. Mike
