Shooting a sunflower field tomorrow afternoon, and hoping for lots of doves. If so, pics will follow.
Thanks, Greg, for all the years of enjoying these threads.
May God bless America and those who defend her.

Well, the doves this afternoon stayed away in droves. Got a few shots however and ended the hot afternoon with five down. Dickinson .410 ![[Linked Image from jpgbox.com]](https://www.jpgbox.com/jpg/75166_800x600.jpg) But, there was a real bonus to the afternoon. While wading through standing corn looking for a dove I had shot down I found this! 2 3/16" X 3/4" ![[Linked Image from jpgbox.com]](https://www.jpgbox.com/jpg/75167_600x400.jpg)

Me too, Travis. I've collected them since I was a Boy Scout. i've accumulated a pretty large collection for them all to be surface finds. I've got a friend and I know another guy here who have automated sifters and dig on their creek bank properties and have amassed absolutely huge collections. One of them recently made a sale of his to a restaurant in NC and the sale price was in the six digit figures.
I'm waiting for another artifact collecting friend to confirm what type this point is. It's one of the nicest I've found in the last twenty years. One other cool find I made was while crouching in the weeds by a newly built pond, hunting ducks. I looked down and saw a petrified sand dollar, about 2 1/2" diameter. Solid rock, but with the little five point "star" clearly visible.
Sorry if I got this got too much off topic. I'll keep it on game bagged from now on.
May God bless America and those who defend her.

Stan,
Is the point shaped from bone or flint?
Parabola It is actually a rock type common to my area called chert. Most call it flint but it's not really flint. The point is probably from the Woodland Period of native American habitation here.
May God bless America and those who defend her.

Stan: My then rural Pennsylvania family have always treasured finding these little artifacts from the past. My paternal grandfather would walk specific farm fields after a good rain, something he did well into his 80s. He had also found some pre-revolutionary English coins (pennies) in that area over the years and he always theorized that some significant conflicts had occurred there in the now-distant past. I believe "knapping" is the term for the forming of flint and chert into arrowheads and spear points? It is done with antlers if I remember correctly. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/pxu6S7Ch.jpg) From my scouting trip yesterday. The mismatched body panel colors make it really fit in up here.

Have a search for Grimes Graves flint knapping museum, over here in Norfolk, England.
It is a fascinating place. You can buy selections of new flint ready for your musket or pistol all in different sizes.

Never heard of women being involved in a McNab, but it seems to me that would be a pretty good quarry to add to the party...Geo Newbern

That's a "Grand MacNab", George.
Having attempted a MacNab several times, I tip my hat to Dukxdog for his accomplishment. I'd love to see the fish/ hear the story.
With Scotland's year round deer eradication program, it won't be long and a MacNab will be nigh impossible.
Out there doing it best I can.

To complete the McNab Challenge successfully do you have to take the salmon, stag and brace of grouse between dawn and dusk on the same day or can it be within a 24 hour day, such as 12 noon one day to 12 noon the next?

My friend, Don Hardin, in his 83rd year has a double on Huns in Saskatchewan. Don is now gone, but I'm hoping my grandson, Jack, the shortest one in the second picture, is now old enough and will try to take Don's place. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/bITzBUp.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/EqeBlvC.jpg)

With Scotland's year round deer eradication program, it won't be long and a MacNab will be nigh impossible. The MacNab is daylight to dark on the same day. The fish were not anxious to play. Four of us tried but I was the only guy to get a take. They have had a hard fish season. Only 38 salmon caught this year as opposed to 140+ last year! Minimal rain was the big factor. We drove to Dunkeld to visit JP Daeschler at John Dickson & Son. I have a Dickson Round action made in 1880 I used regularly for pheasants. Haggis was EXELLENT! Also Cullen Skink! We had a super visit to Scotland. Highly recommended. My friends are all planning to return for another try at the MacNab ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/qBFLYN9f/IMG-6142.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/KYWrbm0v/IMG-9108.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/y8VTXQJB/IMG-9686.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/vByjyH1w/IMG-9685.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/cC6YDyyS/IMG-9597.jpg) Haggis, Tatties & Nips with Whiskey gravy

Good first hunt of the season. Not a big bag, but a good time with old friends. Pleasant weather which was nice for a change. The birds left when the good weather came in, so you can't have it all. I used a 20 gauge Trojan I bought off this site years ago. Still a favorite. ![[Linked Image from tntfiles.com]](http://tntfiles.com/thumb/86c69c2477069e68af42f45a9341381fcc8e7b500250b8d9bdc1668a965444b6.jpg) ![[Linked Image from tntfiles.com]](http://tntfiles.com/thumb/151fb51ae6febe87c19a7030a66bc472015b5a2950a93b5a885d9633c1945850.jpg)

Not many birds on a recent trip to Wyoming, I did get a couple and if there is more beautiful country than the Tetons during peak foliage, I sure have not been there. My new to me Setter Trudy along with my first Sage Grouse. I adopted Trudy (a Berg Brothers Setter) this past Spring, we seem to be getting along just fine. I have high hopes for her and it sure looks promising. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/dsvVP1ul.jpg) First Ruff too. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/AGVdpHal.jpg) We might not have shot many birds on this trip but my hunting partner and I had a ton of fun and will likely be back. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/vzutetbl.jpg)

Hey all, my son, daughter, and grandson and I went out for a morning hunt prior to it getting hot this afternoon. We did well, I managed to limit (first time this year), and my son managed two. Addie did very well.....good retrieves and good points. Didn't run into any groups, just singles. A big cold front swept through last night, and with it came a few birds. This snipe, a first for both me and Dusty, was one of them. Dust flushed it from a hayfield we were crossing. It flew around in crazy circles over and over again, until it flew over me. A couple of woodcock were flushed too, and one will be part of dinner with this snipe tonight. We did well seeing that I mismatched my ammo and gun this morning. I grabbed a Cashmore 2.75" chamber gun rather than a Skimin and Woods 2" gun to go with the ammo in my vest. Both wear eland leather buttpads and I just was not paying attention when I was leaving the truck because I was watching some traffic on the county road instead. But the snipe did not notice the gaffe, nor the woodcock. Luckily, the ammo was loaded with plastic wads rather than the normal fiber that I use for hunting with this ammo. More woodcock should be arriving tonight and the rest of this week. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/PLUIYmi.jpg)

Here is a picture of a opening day pheasant hunt in Minnesota with a new to me Vickers Imperial Sidelock 16 gauge with 30" barrels I purchased from Kirby Hoyt. I couldn't be happier with its handling and how nice it carries. ![[Linked Image from jpgbox.com]](https://www.jpgbox.com/jpg/75285_600x400.jpg) ![[Linked Image from jpgbox.com]](https://www.jpgbox.com/jpg/75286_600x400.jpg)

Hey all, well, opener was terrible! High winds (20 to 35) all weekend. Got out for about an hour on Saturday.......got blowned back to the truck! Today was a much better day. Low winds, cool, nice walking weather. Addie did well as always, she got me a limit! Saw quite a few, but some ve@ry spooky. Anyway. I used my 12ga AyA XXV SLE, didn't fail me! Stay well my friends! Went out yesterday looking for a few forest grouse. I did a walk through of some older pine/spruce forestry plantations. Chased up six grouse and managed to connect with three, all were singles. Was out with my AyA 4/53 Cabela’s Classic, 12 GA. BLE. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/jPpvjnTh.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/8Ta3Ju3h.jpg) A close up photo of my AyA 4/53 Cabela’s Classic detailing the coin finished engraving pattern. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/2GVslL1.jpg) This model was supposed entirely hand engraved, as stated by Bruce Buck in his review of the Cabela's Classic in the Shooting Sportsman book, 'Shotguns on Review', published in 2011, pgs. 20-24. He also stated that this foliate and flower engraving pattern wasn’t seen as coming from either England, or Italy. So my speculation, then maybe this engraving pattern was truly Spanish in design? Anyway, each to his own. I like it.

Anyway, each to his own. I like it. That pattern of engraving has been around since at least the 1950s. I lifted this image off the web, a 16 very similar to yours: ![[Linked Image from i.ibb.co]](https://i.ibb.co/0Vr3vs5K/IMG-0902.png) I saw a number 4 deluxe, the model with the scalloped back frame, in 20 gauge a few years back, with the identical engraving, wish I had paid a bit more attention to it and perhaps gotten my bill fold out, it was a really sweet handling little gun. Enjoy. Best, Ted

Hey all, was able to get put for a couple hours this morning. I got a nice double, but the second bird wasn't hit hard. Addie tried to get him, but, alas couldn't find him. Picked up one more, so a good day (except for the wind!). Addie did very well! I used my 16ga Ugartechea 1030 today Stay well my friends Greg ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/6pKy0mdh/20251018-105558.jpg)

Hey all, my son Jim and I went out to a friend's ranch today, we both limited out. Weather was great! Addie did a great job as usual......good retrieves and points. On one retrieve she trailed a runner into a cattail slough and she got him! The best part of the day was being with my son.....I'm truly blessed! I used my 16b Charles Boswell and Jim his 12ga V. Trudy is going to make me a fine bird dog, surprised how well she adapts to different situations. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/eZzaFqml.jpg) Tuck is an old pro, we shot this Prairie Chicken together. Much better shooting today, less birds seen but still took a rooster and a chicken with each dog. Just a beautiful day on the prairie. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/IXpvBYhl.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/ciQMEL8l.jpg)

Hey all, went out today for a bit. Saw a few, mostly wild flushes. Did lose one, even Addie couldn't find him. Did manage two in the bag however. I used my 16ga FN to bsg them. Stay well my friends Greg ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/NfPMTfZf/20251025-143107.jpg)

Hey all, only had time for a short hour hunt. Flushed a few hens and only one boy bird (now in the freezer). It was a beautiful day and Addie did well again. Just quit for the day. We finished with two, one grey and one brown phase. We had 5 or 6 flushes. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/Ta1OAqU.jpg) The cover can be tough. Three winters back, there was 150'' of snow, which made young popple absolutely hell to get through. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/Xc5npfJ.jpg)

Hey all, got out for a couple hours today. Yesterday's rain made some of the roads to my good spots slippery and greasey, so went to a couple other areas. Was able to get two. Birds were a bit skiddish today. Still two is better than none. Addie did well again, very happy with her! Used my 12b Jospeh Harkom today. Beauty picture Greg. A really nice close up of your shotgun, it really makes the photo. This thread has great game photos but lacks close ups of the shotguns. Anyway, just my opinion for what its worth. I enjoy seeing the variety of every ones shotguns as well.
Brent really nice vintage shotgun, what is it?

Tim, mine is a Skimin and Wood (London) made for Kimball Arms.
It is a 2'' chamber 12b. Ideal for grouse and woodcock.

12 year old Setter (going on 5, mostly) 1938 Ithaca Lefever Nitro Special 16 gauge, two gray grouse. ![[Linked Image from i.ibb.co]](https://i.ibb.co/h05b8D3/IMG-0930.jpg) The gun is 1938 vintage, same as my mom, factory 26” tubes, factory CYL and MOD chokes, and original 2 3/4” chambers, 6lbs, 1oz. Simple and plain as it is, all the kings horses and all the kings men cannot, at this date, produce a cost effective Nitro Special again. The “mostly” part with the dog is she is starting to lose her hearing. We have pretty good hand signal coordination going on, and have been working with the vibration setting on her collar, she is just starting to get that. She spent the first year of life deathly ill with an autoimmune disorder, wish I had a buck for every time someone told me to put her down. I didn’t, and she is the happiest, healthiest, and calmest English Setter I’ve ever owned. Good hunting, everybody! Best, Ted

Sandspurs can really be a problem out there. I have carried my dog numerous times because of spurs or other nasty problems. I always thought it was good to have a dog I could carry, and I trained all my dogs to be carried. But I can not carry what I used to. It is getting to be a lot more challenging that is used to. I need to adopt some younger backs and legs. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/e5tPbVd.jpg)

My Nebraska hunting partner has a pair (actually a trio just recently), of grifs. They get spurs pretty bad, but not any better or worse than my goldens. Once they got into a bizarre "burr" that was like masking tape, only 20 times more difficult to remove. They looked like mummies when I caught up with them. We ended up driving 60 miles to a town where we could find better grooming tools and some "Cowboy Magic". After an hour on each one on the tailgate, we got them cleaned up enough that they could hunt again. We have gotten better about carrying gear like that, esp. first aid stuff, but we don't carry boots and I wonder why not.

Yeah, I keep a backpack chocked full of Dog first aide stuff. Evidently the pads on the German Drahthaar are closer together or something, as I did not have to remove any Sandspurs from her feet. Too, maybe even her pads had a slightly additional thickness as she just didn't pick up many whilst the other two had dozens on there's??

Hey all, went out today solo, it was a beautiful day! 70 degrees and very low wind, like almost none! Down side was the birds were really spooky! Typical late season behavior. Still Addie was able to pin a couple (I did lose one unfortunately) One gave Addie a merry chase, but she got him! Used my 12b Cogswell and Harrison Konor Stay well my friends Greg ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/G2h5hd85/20251114-144731.jpg)

I deal with sandspurs by having my Brittanys converted to GSPs by having their coats cut to half inch length just before the season. Otherwise, it's the Dickens getting them out of Abby who resists removal. The other two are less sensitive. I think I could remove Willa's spleen with a rusty knife and she wouldn't flinch. Gil

The gun is a gussied up Lyon & Lyon SLNE in 12 gauge, proofed for 31/4 tons. They go cheap in British auctions: £50-£150. But it has a certain slim elegance and shoots just fine. Wow.... Thanks for posting. The colour of those remind me of the Parakeets of South America. Nothing like a good Parakeet shoot in Argentina. Then use an incendiary cartridge to burn the tree of nests.

Thanks for confirming that they are yellow footed green pigeons - at first glance I thought my vision had gone weird!
Do they taste good?

Serbus,
Raimey rse I have seen the parakeets fly by in small droves in Cordoba, too. But, I never understood why the locals want so badly for them to be killed. The bird boys will yell at you to "Shoot, shoot!" when some are spotted. I could never tell that there were enough of them to be a real nuisance. Eared doves hold that distinction there. Maybe they think the shooters consider them a trophy, of sorts.
May God bless America and those who defend her.

I forgot to note that I typically start off w/ a BüHag from 1956 with tight, I mean tight chokes and then this year I switched to a 12 Bore Belgian Sourced Galand A&D Body Action w/ ejectors & steel buttplate to bludgeon those Coons, which was quite a bit lighter and wielded well. I just need to get a proper leather sling as we trekked 12-15 miles per day. @ One point I switched to a Borovlje(Ferlacher) in 24 Bore which was very nice, but training Kids & Dogs you need the 12 bore w/ longer tubes.

Well on the Parakeets, they are Pigeons(Sky Rats) w/ teeth. The are terrible & most destructive on the Power Infrastructure. The eat the coating off the wires & nest on the towers. South of Córdoba near La Cumbrecita there is a Nuclear Power facility & along the 151 kv or whatever lines, you will find the in droves. In that area they affectionally refer to me as the >>Green Bird Murderer<<. One morning I witnessed a Spaniard shoot 73 in short order under a tree. Several times I could drop 7 @ a time in one shot because the flocks were so dense.

Thanks for confirming that they are yellow footed green pigeons - at first glance I thought my vision had gone weird!
Do they taste good? Excellent. They are entirely frugivorous, very rarely descending to the ground.

![[Linked Image from thumbs2.imgbox.com]](https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/6f/1b/W2kAPNLr_t.jpg) I just glanced upon a wall & noticed this sketch where my eldest son depicted me Hunting some 15+ years ago. With the bird falling, he was confident I could hit one. @ that time I kept a dozen dogs..... I had Tri-Colour Beltons & Pointing Labs along w/ my Shorthairs. Serbus, Raimey rse

Sunday Evening I went goose hunting with two friends in the reeds of the elbe. Big ships sailing up to Hamburg in the background, quite a sight! I managed to shoot two barnacle geese with my William Evans from 1897 in 12/65. The Eley Grand Prix in 12/67,5 Size 4 worked perfectly. Sorry for the picture, it was dark out. ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/QBMwcY2k/IMG-8241.jpg)
