He'd be even bigger if you'd used a hammer on him.

Good looking grouse and a great looking gun!!! Interestingly enough, I am 76 years old, been hunting for 68 of those years, and to date have never shot any kind of grouse. Maybe this year??????

Me too, Perry. But, where there's life there's hope.

It's a good thing you removed that one from the gene pool - in a few more generations it could have produced a velociraptor!

That’s a nice Dusky.

A big male I presume.

They’re an interesting bird. Males are reverse migrators, so they go up the mountain and eat Pineneedles all winter, instead of coming down with the snow like the hen’s do..

In my view, before they get on the pine needles they’re the best tasting of all the grouse, and one bird is big enough for two people

We’ll done!

Out there doing it best I can.

Good luck, Perry. I was born and grew up in Iowa. I didn't have any idea that we had ruffed grouse in Iowa. I was away for close to 20years. overseas and inDC. I returned to Iowa with a bird dog and my first sxs. And lo and behold, the DNR offered Iowans their first season on grouse in a very long time. woodcock as well. Initially, what I knew about those birds came mainly from books and articles on bird hunting inmagazines So it was a lot of trial and error. Because grouse were only found in the northeast corner of the state and
pheasants were pretty much everywhere. And sometimes fairly decent quail hunting in the southern third of the state, grouse didn't get much attention . But fortunately for grouse hunters, the state owned a fair amount of property. where grouse were found. But for people who hadn't hunted grouse and/ or woodcock, the cover looked pretty challenging. As in.. . .. You have to walk through that to find those birds? I did manage to convert a couple friends. And eventually we got a Ruffed Grouse Society chapter started. If nothing else, it was something to do before pheasant season opened.

Larry, that cover that I see in the videos is still a deterrent for me. I hunted in stuff like this with my wifes grandfather for quail and I said then I would buy quail before I would ever hunt in brush like that!!
