For the most part I couldn't care less if the tang sits open or closed EXCEPT when casing them. The open tang is a pain pulling it out of a sleeve or in a case and having to make sure it is sitting on the down side.
Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

The open tang is a pain pulling it out of a sleeve or in a case and having to make sure it is sitting on the down side. There's really no reason to leave the top lever "open", to the right, when casing a gun. It's super easy to depress the trip pin/button to release it to center. Releasing it also relieves the spring of some of it's tension.

On the aforementioned Italian and Spanish guns, the lever returns to center when the barrels are removed. You have to push the lever over to the right to reassemble either gun.
