I have a Merkel model 8 3 inch 20 gauge and I can’t find the chokes listed on the gun. It was made in 1983 and I see the standard proofs on the barrel flats, but no stars or abbreviations.

They never used the stars. They normally are marked VZ for IC and 1/4 for quarter choke 1/2 for Mod, 3/4 for improved modified ans 1/1 for Full. Should have a date code also. That is probably marked GDR on the barrels as it was made in East Germany. GSI was probably the importer unless it was brought back by a GI stationed in Europe.

In any case the code (s) on the barrels are not the actual choke but represent the constriction that may result in the choke (which may vary depending on the ammo being used). You can determine the actual chokes by "patterning" the barrels with the ammunition you will be hunting with.
