Actually, thank you, Carcano. Investigating further on European website blogs reveals the same advice you are giving, with one gunshop stating that they will not install an einstecklauf larger than .22 Hornet, "even if it costs them business." (....) Could you mention for us which locking systems on drillings are appropriate for larger calibers? The two potential candidates would be a Kippblockverschuss (Vertikalblockverschluss) after Jäger, now quite popular again due to Blaser and Merkel (the latter modified); and a Kerstenverschluss (double Greener). The third candidate, namely a Herkulesverschluss, is rather uncommon if not rare. Carcano

Used Einsteckläufe at times can be found at good prices. This one, e.g., costs less than 1/4th of its very stiff new price: https://www.progun.de/haendlershop~buechsenmacherei_jan_bruder/uebersicht/h0d9256t_einstecklauf_keller___simmann_ohne_6x70r.html#beschreibung

Vol423, Unless the 6.5 barrel is completely corroded, I highly recommend using it "as is". The 6.5x58R S&S is a neat little cartridge (6.5x 48R S&S too) and is well worth saving. In mine, I find the rifling very shallow, but it works. It (and the 6.5x48R S&S) use a .261" bullet instead of .264". It is pretty easy to re-size .264" bullets to .261". I use 90 grain varmint bullets and 95 grain game bullets because 123 grain round nose bullets are not available and 129grain spitzer bullets would be too long. Anyway, increased velocity by virtue of the lighter bullets is a bonus. If you just want a 22 Mag. the short normal ELs in my drillings work very well on bobcat and racoon size animals. BYTW, Osker on this board finds the 6.5x58R S&S very good on Coyotes. I wouldn't be afraid to use it on Whitetails within reasonable range. Mike

Perhaps you will know Carcano. Used Einsteckläufe do appear on Egun and similar. But I assume that only a gunsmith would install most of them. They are specific not only to the shotgun gauge but also the barrel length. Perhaps some can be shortened to the new muzzle length and the adjusting screws and their housing shifted backwards also. But also they would need to fit the new choke or at least be adjustable somehow to make a firm fit to the muzzle/choke of the new gun. I can see that, at the breech/chamber end some of them, (such as S&K), are adjustable to take up any space there at the leade of the chamber.
I have one of the older Krieghoff style Einsteckläufe that is well short of muzzle-length, in .22-Magnum. In fact, it fits into a recess in the stock along with spare cartridges. At 70m it is quite adequate for small game such as hares, but it would be handy to have a muzzle-length Einsteckläufe in 6x70R or similar with not so much back-thrust on the breech end of a Drilling.
Just to mention here also, that I have 3x very short Einsteckläufen, little more than the length of a cartridge in .22LR, .22 Magnum and .22 Hornet. These 3 all fit in my 5,6x57 RWS. My young son was able to learn to shoot with the .22LR, then the .22 Mag. Next the 22 Hornet and finally he shot a fallow deer buck, his first with the 5,6x57. As a way to introduce young children this system has much merit. In New Zealand there are no minimum calibre regulations and the strongly constructed 74 grain RWS-Kegel Spitze was more than adequate.

Kiwi bloke, I don't think different chokes would be much of a problem with used full length einstecklaeufes. The act of adjusting the point of impact from the muzzle should make up the difference. Differing barrel lengths can be a potential problem. Maybe some full-length ELs can be shortened, but it would be pretty hard to lengthen one. If the shot barrel is only a little longer than the EL, maybe the adjustment screws can be reached with common or longer "Allen wrenches". If I could find enough cartridge cases I agree with you that a full-length EL in 6x70R would be handy. Failing availability of cartridge cases, 5.6x50R would be my second choice. Mike

Many thanks Der Ami. I can see now how the bearing surface of the adjustment parts would likely take up the difference in chokes. So a second-hand EL of the right length/calibre could indeed be a good buy.

My plan is to install in a slotted left tube of a 16 bore Post War II Sauer or Ferlacher. Do I have all the components to correctly install? Of course it fits, but I am sure there is a rotation / position requirement. Serbus, Raimey rse

Raimey, Are you planning to install the EL in a drilling or double shotgun? This is the normal type of short EL, but in "extra" length (44 cm. as I recall) and were normally made for the right-hand barrel. Upon request, they would make one for the left barrel, so the chances are very good yours was made for the right side. In a drilling, it is preferable to install the EL in the right barrel to be able to take advantage of the set trigger. If you intend to install it in a double shotgun left barrel to take advantage of a more open choke in the right barrel, in addition to needing to install rifle sights or a scope, "sighting in" a righthand EL in the left barrel will be much more difficult. A similar situation exists installing a righthand EL in the top barrel of an O/U, and Walter Grass and I did that with my Heym that has 4-barrel sets. A couple things to watch for: the adjustment pads have two screws to lock them down after adjustment, and on one side to have enough adjustment we had to remove one of the locking screws. The other thing to watch for: when making adjustments after observing bullet impact, you need to know if the bullet struck the inside of the barrel and deflected to the opposite direction. A sign of this is if what seems to be a proper adjustment sends the bullet in the other direction. My experience with this was with the common 22 cm long EL, I'm not sure if a 44 CM long El is long enough that a bullet will exit the barrel before it hits the inside of the barrel. If the gun you intend use is one that has never had had an EL installed, you will need to carefully file a notch in the extractor to "locate" the EL if removed and reinstalled. Also, the rim recess will need to be "squared" to fit the headspace adjustment screw. You won't have the tool normally used to do this so you will have to use something like a " Dremel: tool. scraper, files, etc. to relieve the radius in the bottom inside corner of the recess. Good luck. Mike

Someone on this blog loaned me the extractor cut tool for 16 ga. short .22 barrel. I was then asked to mail it on to the next user....It would probably have been almost as easy to carefully scrape it out.

As I stated in my post, I have a couple that are notched in the right tube & the 44 cm EL fits just lovely, but for the moment I am not sure how to secure it in battery. I have seen an instruction sheet here on the DGS BBS but I have not searched for it just yet.
