Someone was posting about a very light Remington Model 31 with the Aeromet receiver recently. On my way home from hunting yesterday I stopped by my local gun emporium, and they had a real closet queen 12-gauge Model 31L of October 1947 vintage (barrel code ESS). This gun weighs in at 6 pounds 10.4 ounces. It does have very possibly the heaviest possible barrel, a 30-inch full with a solid rib. Not sure what I "need" a 30-inch full for, but it was too nice to leave in a pawn shop!

A Damn fine good old pump - the solid rib 30" with the Aeromet is interesting. I have 31s in 20 & 16, I enjoy shooting them.

Mine's a tale that can't be told, my freedom I hold dear.

Sounds like a most interesting combo! I hope you will shortly report on its advantages/disadvantages when used for the 'crazy skeet' [I don't recall the exact name] you once earlier described being hosted at your club.

The full choke on the gun is only .031" but with 1 ounce Gun Clubs that is apparently a really full choke. At our wonderful Wooble Skeet game I smoked a few really long birds today, but missed many easy short to mid-range targets. I like the foreward weight to the gun with that heavy barrel in front of the light receiver. Also, the gun seems to shoot a bit high as others on the squad were saying I shot over many of my misses. Will try again tomorrow.

Congratulations on the find, Dave.

I sort of figured there'd be other M31's to come along when I saw you over here at one of our western Montana shoots with the first one you bought a few years back.

As for the added weight of the solid rib barrels, it IS substantial. I've a 28" SR bbl. 12 ga. M31A from the late 40's for which I later found a plain 28" modified barrel. Weights are 2 lb. 2 oz. for the SR, and 1 lb. 12 oz. for the plain jane one - for a 6 oz. difference. The small rib profile can't account for all of that, and I suspect that the MWT is significantly more substantial than in the plain barrels based on my cursory measurements.) The SR 28" barrel here also has the same .031" constriction on a .731 nominal bore (Remington liked the number, I guess)and like yours, prints much tighter than one would expect at 40 yds.

A fun pump gun to shoot, and I hope you enjoy yours for a long time to come.

Bored sitting around waiting to go to our friends for Thanksgiving dinner I weighed some Model 31 barrels, all three 30-inch full.

Vent rib from 1949 Model 31-TC -- 2 pounds 2.8 ounces

Solid rib from 1947 Model 31L -- 2 pounds 5.5 ounces

Plain barrel from 1947 Model 31A -- 1 pound 15.3 ounces.

A 31L with a solid rib, does seem like an odd combination. I would have guessed solid ribs to be discontinued by 1947. I am sure you know, that a high percentage of 31L's have a crack, at the bottom of the receiver, where the magazine tube is pressed into it. I have never seen one that showed any sign of the tube being loose, or causing any function problems.
I would love to find a TC! I have never even seen one. Only a few that were made up trap guns with Simmons ribs and restocked with high combs.
Do you have any information on things, like when solid ribs were discontinued? When was the transition to the long trigger gaurd? When was the change to the uncheckered, ringed forend? When was the L introduced?
