A big cold front swept through last night, and with it came a few birds. This snipe, a first for both me and Dusty, was one of them. Dust flushed it from a hayfield we were crossing. It flew around in crazy circles over and over again, until it flew over me. A couple of woodcock were flushed too, and one will be part of dinner with this snipe tonight.
We did well seeing that I mismatched my ammo and gun this morning. I grabbed a Cashmore 2.75" chamber gun rather than a Skimin and Woods 2" gun to go with the ammo in my vest. Both wear eland leather buttpads and I just was not paying attention when I was leaving the truck because I was watching some traffic on the county road instead. But the snipe did not notice the gaffe, nor the woodcock. Luckily, the ammo was loaded with plastic wads rather than the normal fiber that I use for hunting with this ammo.
More woodcock should be arriving tonight and the rest of this week.
