Well, that certainly was an interesting discussion on the pros and cons of chamber lengthening... a subject which has been debated here countless times in the past. I think it's prudent to give Ed the benefit of the doubt here, especially since he expressly said, gunsmith usually can safely open Sauer chambers to 2 3/4"...but still keep loads to under 1200 psi..

Ed obviously is depending on a competent gunsmith to do the job "safely", which would entail measuring the forcing cone area before and after lengthening any chambers. It is a job that can be screwed up, like just about anything. But it has been done safely and successfully many thousands of times. Also, Ed has frequently stated his opinions on minimum safe barrel wall thickness, including .090" at the forcing cones. In fact, just about every time Ed tells us his idea of minimum wall thicknesses, the Nutty Professor chimes in like Pavlov's Dumbest Dog, demanding that Ed provide measurements of the guns he is selling... even though he has said he'd never buy a gun from Ed. But he is a troll who simply hates Ed. He cries about members being driven away, but has no regrets about his own attempts to drive certain people away. Yet he now calls Ed a hypocrite! Funny stuff that makes this forum extra amusing if you pay attention to all of the games.

It seemed evident to me that ED's 1200psi remark was a simple typo or brain fart, and that he actually meant fps for velocity.

Bad, bad advice regarding chamber lengthening and 1200 psi. 1200 psi isn't enough pressure to barely open the crimp and would be perfect to roll shot out of the end of the muzzle. Maybe you meant fps, but fps generally isn't related to pressure (psi), but man alive, 1200 psi is a burp and a dribble...

I tend to agree with eightbore. It's probably better and cheaper in the long run to leave the Sauer chambers as is, and use the savings to buy 2 1/2" low pressure loads.

There have also been countless discussions here about torch coloring, but I don't recall a single instance of that advice leading to either a chamber burst, or anyone blinding themselves. I suppose that statement may have also been either a typo, or a clerical error, or something. However, the Nutty Professor did actually blow up his Rock Island built Model of 1903 Springfield. And subsequent metallurgical analysis of that shattered action showed the probable cause as a single high pressure event... in other words, a reloading screw-up. But to this day, he refuses to admit the obvious, and blamed about everything except his reloads.

So it might be prudent to warn folks about taking any reloading advice from the Nutty Professor.
