I just finished repairing a hairline crack on a friends Browning .270 BAR forend where it meets the receiver, no sweat. But the forend has some up-and-down play in the same area. Tightening the forend lug/swivel stud has no affect. Anyone here have any experience improving this with some type of shim or glass bedding?

I'm not familiar with the forend mounting system used on a commercial semi-auto BAR rifle, but it appears that there must be some recess or forend hanger at the rear where it meets the receiver, and it is secured by the sling swivel stud near the front.
Doing a quick online search for Loose BAR Forend gave some results that suggested the problem is likely due to compressed or damaged wood at the rear. One guy said he tightened his up by inserting a shim made out of a piece of wide rubber band between the rear of the wood and the receiver. That might also be a temporary fix for John's friends' rifle. But a proper repair or glass bedding of the damaged or missing wood would naturally be better. It wouldn't surprise me if that looseness wasn't what caused the forend wood to become cracked in the first place. It may affect accuracy too.
I'm surprised Argo44 didn't know an individual could own a full auto BAR... same as any other legal machine gun. People can be seen shooting them in YouTube videos of the large machine gun shoots at Knob Creek, Ky., Big Sandy, Ariz., etc. I'm also surprised he didn't work in some pictures of his Jeep or Rolex watch.

I know one guy who brought his home from Nam. Some guys kept their weapons from Nam. Walked right through an airport and boarded a plane with them over their shoulders. I like that knife. I have one just like it. Later on, I used to strap it to my calf over my wet suit diving in the Keys. Never needed it though. Thanks for the info. DimmyW is apparently off his brain damage meds again, and making up more shit. During the Vietnam War it was strictly against military regulations for soldiers to keep their issue weapons or bring them home. Soldiers have been known to illegally acquire government issue military weapons. But the idea that a returning Vietnam vet simply boarded a commercial flight home with a full-auto BAR over his shoulder shows us that poor DimmyW is a few bricks short of a load. People this deranged certainly should not be in possession of guns, knives, or any objects more pointy than crayons. But it does make DimmyW qualified to work for CNN or MSNBC, or possibly become a Democrat Congressman.
