Stanton, I wouldn’t have expected anything less than excellence, technically and esthetically, from Mark and this is certainly that. He made your being ”pleased” easy. My eye particularly likes the golden hue to your refinish. And his reshape of the nose enhances the inlay. Very nice in every way.

Buffalo Horn was traditionally used for fore-end tips by British gunmakers. I bought a piece of it from Holland and Holland over 50 years ago for 10 shillings (I think they were being kind) and got 3 fore-end tips out of it, 2 of which I still have, wish I had hung on to the Lee-Speed to which I fitted the first one.

One of the things i'm thinking is about undercutting the inlet and sort of dovetailing the ebony piece into the inlet. Kind of hard to put into words, but if done the way I envision it would have to slide forward to ever come out. I wonder if they were ever done that way, originally.(?) .... I should read the whole thread before posting, seeing as I wound up saying the same thing twice.... before editing my latest post. Mark does beautiful work. I like the length and shape of the inlay Mark did.

The one Chris Dawe did for me was on a nice little German 16 ga and he made it very long and thin. I love how different it is from the usual insert, like yours.
I’ll get a pic tomorrow and add it to my post. Sure would like to see that pic, James. I'm a big fan of ebony forend inlays.

I have had two forend inlays done (by others) but I chose ivory in honor of Nash Buckingham. I have bought ivory from Boone Trading Company.

It's on a nicely made product of Ferlach in 16 gauge. Beautiful, James!.So unique.
I love how they don't all have to be cookie cutter inlays. Long and slender forends look nice with long and slender inlays. And, as yours proves, the checkering pattern affects it, too.
