My recollection is that Larry was in Sudan when our ambassador there was killed in 1973, probably working for CIA. Afterwards he went to Morocco to complete his Master's on LWOP from the Agency and moved to DIA. Since he discussed Qaddafi and the Libyan occupation of N'djamena in Chad over the Auozou Strip (1980) I suspect he was in Morocco 1978-79. CIA did not take people without military service at one point so he may have served in the Army before 1973 - I don't recall him discussing Vietnam though. That would put his birthdate around 1948 I'd suspect. He has led an adventuresome and productive life both for his country and for our sport.

Great info there Argo44 as well as Terrific Tribute. Some stellar accolades / moniker to have stamped on the Dog Tags donned by one. Chaos then abroad & chaos today @ home. Little has changed.

I believe Argo is correct in his estimation of Larry's age. In an online conversation I had with him once we talked about various units and organizations and about our ages. If I remember correctly Larry was around one year plus or minus older than me. I will be 77 on the 3rd of February so that puts Larry in the 78 age group. I am so sorry to hear this about him. I would not wish this on anyone, friend or not. But it is especially distressing when you hear it about someone you now and have communicated with from time to time. I have to laugh at the comment made earlier about him wanting to own every gun and all on the same $5000. I asked him once did he actually have any guns or did he trade or sell them away before they could ever get into his gun safe. He laughed and said "not many" I know he is still breathing but he will surely be missed when he is gone. May God be with him and his family.

I have shot summer skeet with Larry for several years at Boulder Junction Shooting Range in northern Wisconsin. This past summer on occasion Larry would ask which target was coming, but it didn't affect his ability. He was a good shot.

Larry Brown is 80 years old.

Larry has been a good personal friend for many years. We have hunted, trout fished and have shot skeet, 5-Stand, Sporting Clays together at our local clubs. We have shot together in many of the bigger SXS Shoots held in the general area -- Medford, Woods & Meadow, Duluth Doublegun and the Yoopers-- both in Sagola and Negaunee, MI. We've partied with Larry and Michele at several New Years Eve parties and get togethers over the past years . . . It's so very sad to see your friend in decline.

From Upland Journal Forum:

Some Members and myself noticed Larry’s absence from the Board. (User Name L. Brown) He’s typically active. I emailed him to see if all was OK. No response until this morning. I received the following email response from his wife.

Hi, Brad.

This is Larry's wife, Michele.
Larry is likely not going to be on the Board anymore. He's not been using his computer much.
He has mild dementia, so I'm not sure that anything he'd write would make the most sense.

Sad news indeed for Col. Brown, I have experience with a family member with dementia.

Never met him face to face but had some conversations over time. As I recall he was Army reserve. This may be during the Vietnam years and maybe where he became "Col." Brown. I think also he was a Prof at one of the Iowa schools. A full resume!

So sorry to hear this. First met Larry back at one of the first Yooper Shoots in Sagola. Since them always considered him a friend. Hope he thought the same of me. Should this make its way to his family, I sure wish and hope for the best for him. A fine man indeed.

I chuckle over that all the time.

Two well-known personalities soon to be meeting up in the great prairies of the beyond.

Larry seemed to be more of a generalist with guns, he was just as enthusiastic about a Browning A5 Sweet 16 as he was about a good double. I don’t believe he ever warmed up to a pump, and, though he tried numerous times, a Darne befuddled him. I would rib him that if you couldn’t chew gum and walk at the same time, a Darne wasn’t going to work out for you. He agreed.

Gene, have you had any contact with Fab? We used to PM fairly regularly, but, that seems to have gone dead for a month or so.

Best,
Ted
