People speak about knowledgeable or unknowing employees. It's definitely just me, but I usually tell people, "I'm just looking." as soon as I get into any store. I usually know exactly what I want and I don't want a salesman to try to sell me something and pester me. Especially in a sports store. I go in to get something and I almost always know exactly what I am looking for and I've already done my homework, so I don't want to be bothered. I carry the Blue Book, my cell phone and snap caps and barrel gauge in my car. If I need to know something, I'll go back out to the car and look. You remember the movie, "Maybe we should stop and ask for directions. Mom always does." And his father says, "Men don't do that!" Well, that's me. Ha-ha!! I usually don't buy something I see that I didn't go into a store for, anyway. If I see something new I haven't seen before, I'll take a day or two to think about it before I go back and look at it again. I don't need someone to tell me what I need. That's just the way I am. Sorry for the rant. Stay warm.

Cabela's service and gun quality was headed in the wrong direction long before Bass Pro bought them. Once they got rid of all the knowledgeable gun Library managers it went downhill quickly. You simply can't hire kids off the street with zero old gun knowledge pay them $11.00 per hour and expect to retain any long-time customers. Bass Pro certainly made it worse but zero plus zero is still zero!
The days of cased English shotguns at Cabela's are long gone. But if you want a cheap Turkish semi auto Shotgun then Cabela's is definitely the way to go. The gun Library in each store is full of them! Every time I brought that up, I was shouted down. A few years ago, I had physical therapy in a building that was right down the street from the world’s “Outmost Forfeiter”. I stopped in one afternoon to look at the gun library, and the glass cases contained “a rare and valuable collection of”….. Wait for it…. Remington Zytel plastic stocked nylon 66 .22 rifles. Must have been 50 of those turds. I shit you not. Under lock and key. Best, Ted Given the price tag, they go for, makes sense to me. Stevens plastic stocked overunders are another one. Definitely, don't want some yahoo, like you, cracking the stock in the store

I've had good luck with them, again, BEFORE BPS.
Used to have good staff and nice guns, and would deal. Now they just lie to you to make a sale.

Basic question--When has a corporate merger with the following consolidation for efficiently and maximizing profits ever benefitted the consumer?
IMO: The day Cabela's started its decline was the day it went public; that's the day that the private equity vultures started circling overhead. Once the dust settled Bass Pro, Cabela's, Sportsman's warehouse, Gander Mountain & if I heard right Macks Prairie wings are all under the same corporate umbrella and are basically one in same selling cheapened goods made to a price point in some far-off distant land. It's up to us as individual consumers to decide if we want to shop at them or not.
We have two Cabela's, two Bass-pro's & four sportsman's warehouses within 60 miles of my house and I haven't set foot in any of them in close to four years now. That's my story on this, take it for what it's worth to you.

We should just put one of these threads about cabela's on auto replay. It's the same thing every time... I've noticed that. When an anti policy is revealed, you-n-Jimmy go into yahoo, spin mode. So, a spread of thirty side by sides, one of the better shops in the country, eh. What's the secret for not getting the lifetime ban, pull up in a prius with a, gimme a big ole cup o jo bumper sticker.

Those of us that have actually been there in recent times seem to have a very different story than those of us who, as one poster above noted hate the place, but have not been in there in four years. By the way, show me where I said, "one of the better shops in the country." Come on and show me you, lying [censored - come on man!]. There's nothing like no experience to justify a negative opinion.
