you might have already seen this, but just in case you missed it and are interested-- I put together
a compilation of sorts of all the traditional finish information on DGJ that I could find. Others have made significant contributions (beyond the original sharing of info) with suggestions for additions and revisions. The second half of the document is a collection of finishes that are from books, articles, etc. I'm always looking for things to add or revise, so please share if you have info.
I should note that what I've put together is only about non-poly finishes. there are one or two mentions of synthetic finishes but only in passing. It is definitely not a treatise on general gun stock finishing
