At that time there was little distinction between military and commercial Mauser actions. This one with the downward, straight bolt handle and double-set triggers is a sporter. That rifle is nice, complete with all matching and numbered parts. So many have been altered, stripped or cut down, it would be a shame to do that to this rifle. if you are looking for a project, there is a non-completed rifle out there just waiting for you. If you want a 7x57 by all means find one. I have one, great cartridge.
Sell this one to finance another. I'd probably buy it if we could come to terms?

This project sounds like a lot of fun. Mauser 98 actions were first made for military rifles, especially the ones that shoot 8mm bullets. But a lot of them were changed on so you need to look at the marks on them like the proof marks and the serial number style to figure out where they came from and how old they are.

If you want to make your Mauser 98 action shoot 7x57 bullets that is a common thing to do. The Mauser 98 action and the 7x57 bullet are a match.. It is not a simple job that you can do by yourself. You will need to get a barrel and make sure the headspacing is right. You might also need to make some changes to how the bulletsre fed into the gun.

If the Mauser 98 action is, in shape it is a strong and reliable gun that is worth building on. The Mauser 98 action is a platform to start with.

Clip guides have no distinction over commercial or military, almost every single commercial Mauser Oberndorf has them. Also the Model 98 action since its inception was built also as a commercial rifle, that was in 1897. The actions from this early timeframe are small ring, lack a bolt shroud detent, firing pin cams, have narrow gas ports etc, but are still a true Mauser 98 with third bolt lug. Many of these actions as described made their way to Rigby and Sauer and feature very low Mauser serials on the lower receiver flat. The Suhl/Z-M region had a long history of obtaining surplus and rejected military actions and made significant use of them for as new built commercial rifles, you see this all the way through the end of WW2. Generally, only your higher end makers, eg. Sauer, Merkel etc purchased new commercial Mauser actions, and even then, not in every case were these used in new builds. A significant amount of surplused actions made their way to Suhl from both the state arsenals and the myriad of commercial producers of the Gew98 in the interwar era. Very often you will still see the evidence of this, a first right receiver position fraktur inspection, indicating the receiver was never previously completed into a rifle. In no way shape or form, can a rifle be considered “sporterized” in this scenario and a lot of people have trouble with that distinction.
